E ssential Functions and Objectives:

S upports operations through practical application of knowledge, use of proven techniques, and adherence to procedures. Primary focus on execution of assigned tasks in a specific area of responsibility, with a technical emphasis; such as; equipment, machinery, or scientific/chemical.

P erforms repairs, maintenance and inspections of Denver Public School (DPS) vehicles.

- Performs hands-on tasks applying proven industry standards and techniques, while adherence to policies, procedures, or guidelines in the area of responsibility. Installs, tests, analyzes, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, related equipment in order to support short-term operations and minimize downtime.

- Performs data entry and verification, keeps accurate files/records, creates detailed reports, using various existing systems for accurate, timely, and compliant records.

- Receives, understands, and disseminates information in subject matter to appropriate stakeholders. Diagnoses problems and aids in resolving technical issues and escalates appropriately to ensure a positive experience.

- Contributes to identifying process inefficiencies and proposes solutions, identifies opportunities through external research on trends in resources, programs, and services and internal research with stakeholders, and supports improvement efforts in order to support long-term operations and minimize downtime.

- Performs required annual Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and Colorado Driver's License inspections on district vehicles and completes necessary paperwork, recording identified defects.

- Inspects Maintenance Tech II vehicle repairs and signs off on CDE forms certifying that vehicle work has been performed according to standards.

- Disassembles vehicles for inspection; performs secondary diagnostics; troubleshoots cause of defect and determines needed repairs. Performs major repairs that directly involve safety to the public. Performs maintenance and repair services on district fleet in accordance with quality assurance inspection guidelines, DPS standards, and established work rules and policy.

- Completes required forms and paperwork using FASTER, ensuring completeness, accuracy and proper placement of forms in vehicle.

- Completes daily time reporting and submits to Shop Supervisor.

- Test drives vehicles, and tests components and systems, using diagnostic equipment.

- Tracks time worked on each vehicle by type of repair according to Time on Task standards.

- Operates service truck and makes service calls for district vehicle breakdowns.

- Performs operator pre-trip vehicle inspections by checking condition and availability of safety and emergency equipment in accordance with State of Colorado and Commercial Driver's License authority.

- Creates safe work environment by monitoring shop areas, examining tools and equipment, and providing employee safety training. Maintains work area by cleaning tables; scrubbing floors; and throwing away or recycling materials.

- Determines work sequences of repairs and maintenance activities, based on work priority, and availability of parts.

- Participates in and supports a team work environment by interacting with other technicians and supervisors, and assisting in the development of new practices and technology. Communicates and coordinates fleet maintenance schedule and concerns with shop supervisor.

- Records maintenance activities by utilizing computerized system, ensuring maintenance standards are met.

- Executes contingency plans during inclement weather operations.

- Communicates with vehicle operators during service calls or refers operator to Shop Supervisor.

- Updates, trains other personnel in, and communicates current knowledge of fleet maintenance practices.

- Works to maintain current CDE Inspector certification, and ASE certifications.

- Perform other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:

- Technical community college graduate in automotive/truck mechanics (1 yr. program), two (2) years vehicle maintenance experience and demonstrated - initiative in taking ASE tests (preferably passing) and successfully completing approximately 13 weeks of work with a "journeyman level" maintenance technician (OJT).

- A full set of tools and/or four (4) years of vehicle maintenance experience, journeyman level preferred and ASE certification in school bus/automotive/heavy truck preferred.

- A full set of tools and/or a combination of education and experience.

- Experience in a transportation organization, preferably school bus operations and fleet maintenance.

- Experience operating tow or service truck, desired.

- A current and valid State of Colorado Driver's License (CDL) is required with Class A and BP2S endorsements (or ability to acquire within 6 months). Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle. ASE Certification in primary work area required for promotion beyond level twelve (12). Must acquire and maintain ASE Master certification in relevant field of work for school bus, automobile, or collision repair for full advancement. Colorado Department of Education (CDE) inspector certification or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire.

- Knowledge of maintenance skills (e.g., welding, machine work, electrical and mechanical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, overhaul and rebuild, air and hydraulic brakes, tire repair).

- Knowledge of fleet maintenance software (e.g., Faster) and vehicle diagnostic systems (e.g., On Board Diagnostics (OBD), Mitchell ondemand).

- Knowledge of safety issues and regulations when operating and repairing vehicles.

- Knowledge of Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Fluid Mechanics & Computational Science (FMCS) rules, regulations and requirements.

- Ability to troubleshoot and technical skills for diagnosis and repair.

- Ability to work effectively as team member.

- Ability to multi-task and complete work with frequent interruptions.

- Ability to communicate clearly in English, in both written and oral formats.

- Proficiency with Google Suite/MS Office and other computer software programs.

E ducation Requirements:

- High School Diploma or GED certificate required.
