Job Title: Paraeducator, Emotionally Disabled Work Year: 177 days Department: School-based Reports To: Principal and Teacher Salary Range: 24 Starting Salary: $16.24/hr Summary: Under the direction of a certified teacher, responsible for assisting severely emotionally disabled students in a variety of academic and social settings and ensuring the students' safety and those with whom they are in contact on a daily basis. Duties also include implementing instructional strategies individually and/or small groups, providing appropriate feedback to students regarding behavior and academics, checking in with teachers and students who are attending inclusion classes, ensuring students are safe at all times in all school locations, providing appropriate de-escalation techniques and restraint as necessary, maintaining daily records of student behavior and assisting teacher in preparation of instructional materials and clerical duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily 30% Control and monitor disruptive behaviors of disabled students in the classroom, throughout the building, on the playground, before and after school, during field trips and during other community activities. Daily 5% Prevent students from hurting themselves or others through the use of de-escalation techniques and, when necessary,restraint or seclusion strategies. Daily 5% Implement prescribed programs for students whose behaviors range from mildly to severely disordered through licensed personnel supervision including Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or Speech/Language Pathologist, Psychologist, Social Worker, or Classroom Teacher(e.g., ADHD, TBI, Autism or Asperger's Syndrome, sexual inappropriateness, etc.). Daily 10% Accompany students to lunch, recess and 'specials' (e.g., music, art, physical education, media center, technology) and monitor/maintain safe and appropriate behaviors during those times. Daily 5% Tutor students individually and in groups, including students integrated into regular education classrooms and those requiring specific learning strategies (e.g., multisensory reading, etc.). Daily 5% Instruct and model vocational skills by assisting students with self-help, domestic, community and recreational tasks and activities. Daily 20% Implement instructional strategies to improve academics, personal safety, socialization, decision making and problem solving individually or in small groups Daily 10% Maintain daily records of student behavior to support the teacher in communicating with parents through 'back and forth' notebooks, phone contact logs, behavior charts and citations for unacceptable behavior. Wkly 2% Provide observations, opinions and feedback to professional staff and parents. Wkly 2% Assist teacher in preparation of instructional materials and performing clerical duties such as typing, filing, copying, answering phone and maintaining supply inventory. Wkly 2% Attend staff, team and committee meetings; parent conferences; staffings; and IEP meetings as necessary. Daily 1% Lift students in and out of wheel chairs for positioning, diaper changing and toileting. Daily 3% Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred. Must have completed at least two years (48 credit hours) of study at an institution of higher education or obtain a passing score on the WorkKeys assessment in Math, Reading and Writing.EXPERIENCE: One year and up to and including two years of experience working with children, preferably school-age children. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER: Oral communication, interpersonal, decision making and basic clerical skills. Ability to work with students of all abilities. Ability to employ high levels of patience, compassion and understanding, yet remain fair, consistent and firm with discipline. Knowledge of child development, abuse, neglect and emotional disabilities. Operating knowledge of personal computers, student information system, email system and copy machine required within 1 month after hire. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPI training certification preferred at hire or completed within the first month of hire. SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job is responsible for supervising the behavior and safety of disabled students in various academic and social settings and the student body while on the playground. Acts as a resource for students, parents and teachers by supporting the students through the educational process, by providing feedback on student progress and status and by assisting the teacher with clerical work. SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self and others to bruises due to student outbursts. Medium exposure to self to cuts due to student outbursts. Low exposure to self and others to fractured bones, loss of sight and disfigurement due to student outbursts. Medium exposure to self to hernia due to lifting and restraining students, to disease due to body fluids and to fatality due to threats. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, instruct, use interpersonal skills, diffuse volatile situations and negotiate.
