The Opportunity
Middle School ELD Teacher (21-22)

The role of the ELD Teacher is to provide direct service English Language Development instruction to English Learners within 6-8, including newcomers, teaching Designated ELD and supporting the development of their English proficiency. Additionally, the ELD Teacher collaborates with other ELD teachers and general education teachers to ensure continuity and quality of EL services and the testing and reclassification of English learners across the school and supports colleagues in successfully supporting English Learners in their classrooms by providing teacher coaching, modeling and development opportunities as appropriate. The ELD Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers and school leadership to ensure that LCPS supports all English Learners to develop English proficiency and succeed academically.

Key Responsibilities:

Designated ELD Instruction:
  • Instruct English Language Learner students in designated ELD classes including courses specifically designed for newcomers and long-term ELLs on a rotating schedule towards appropriate ELD goals and ultimately redesignation as English proficient.
    • Build and maintain a classroom culture that is supportive and learning-centered, undergirded by strong management, efficient procedures, and systems, but most evident in the full inclusion of African-American boys, students with trauma, ELLs, and students with IEPs in the social and learning community.
    • Demonstrate culturally responsive pedagogy and practice including unrelenting high expectations and an assets-based approach for every student.
    • Plan, internalize and implement LCPS adopted, effective, grade-level standards-based ELD curriculum, units, and lessons that are learner-driven and are modified or differentiated while maintaining rigor to provide access and results for ELL students.
    • Ensure that students are at the center of their own learning and deeply engaged in ways that foster agency and self-direction.
    • Utilize, collect, and analyze rigorous, student-engaged assessments, both formative and summative, to identify and address students' areas of growth and mastery of learning objectives.
    • Create positive relationships by building nurturing and affirming teacher-student, student-student, and teacher-family partnerships with a focus on building a community of risk-taking, collaborative learners.
  • Grow and contribute as an educator, colleague, learner, and community member, including engaging in professional development and your own growth as a teacher, in the service of student learning and outcomes.
  • Demonstrate advocacy, flexibility, autonomy, and collegiality.
  • Administer all policies and procedures in a professional and timely manner as mandated by Lighthouse, the State, and Federal agencies (i.e., attendance records, dress code, reporting of sexual/physical abuse).

EL Program Coordination and Collaboration for School/Grade Bands:
  • Implement our collaborative vision for K-12 English Learner programs, with attention to the needs of different grade levels and ELL profiles.
  • Use ELL data to monitor, evaluate and adjust English Language Learner programs.
  • Collaborate with core classroom teachers who are working on goals of supporting English Language Learners, utilizing knowledge of adult learning theory and cycles of data analysis and reflection to improve instructional practice & meet institutional goals.
  • Administer and support coordination of ELPAC testing, both initial and annual, for the school in conjunction with other ELD teachers and the school's testing coordinator.

Serve on the School's ILT (Optional/Dependent on Interest and Experience):May sit on the school's ILT, which would include some planning, designing, and facilitation of ongoing professional development for teachers applying knowledge of adult learning theory and team facilitation to maximize learning and meet school-wide goals. As assigned, conduct walkthroughs and observations of teachers in service of a shared knowledge of current teaching practice in relation to supporting English Learners.

Additional Duties, as assigned by Supervisor

We would love to hear from you if your educational toolbox includes the following:
  • B.A. or B.S. required; Master's Degree in Education preferred
  • California teaching credential required (or appropriate out of state teacher licensure being transferred to CA)
  • Successful ELD teaching experience, required
  • 3+ years teaching in an urban school environment and 6-8 setting, highly preferred
  • 2+ years of coaching and/or school leadership experience preferred
  • Experience with curriculum planning and data-analysis
  • Experience with Google apps, preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish, a plus


Supervision:

This position will report to the K-8 Principal, Tina Hernandez.

TIME COMMITMENT

This position is 1.0 FTE (full-time exempt) and follows a 10-month work year (190 days) with significant student-free days for professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and interaction with families. All instructional staff will report in early August 2021 (exact calendar TBD), new staff will start the last week of July 2021.

Common Building Hours: All teachers are expected to maintain hours of 8:00 - 4:00 pm M, Tu, Th, Fri and 8:00-5:00 on Wednesdays for Professional Development.
