General Statement of Duties:

Performs casework duties under general supervision in Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services Intake; does related work as required.

Essential Duties:
Provide in office coverage for Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services Intake to include receiving and screening referrals by phone, in writing, and in person while conducting system searches to support intake functions and decision-making. Use of state databases to accurately document all referrals (OASIS and Peer Place) and conduct systems searches to gather needed demographic and historical information. For CPS, using the structured decision making Intake tool to determine validity, track and response time and send case alerts as required and identify situations that should immediately be brought to the attention of the CPS Unit. For APS, take requests for other services to include adult and child screenings for nursing home and community based care, requests for Assisted Living and companion care, and other services based on community and agency needs.

Provide general information and referral to the public for other inquiries received through hotlines, in person and in writing. Be knowledgeable about agency and community programs to provide referrals to both internal and external customers. Provide coverage for the intake process for family preservation/foster care prevention services for homeless families, families requesting a relief of custody and other circumstances when a youth is at risk of out of home placement. Attend court hearings, family partnership meetings and other meetings related to case planning for youth and families. Assist with family finding and engagement activities. Participate in community, agency and division committees and task forces as needed for specific projects or for ongoing functions.
Considerable knowledge of social work principles and practices; considerable knowledge of current social, economic and health concerns and problems, both globally and locally; good knowledge of individual and group behavior and of current literature and trends in the social work field; good knowledge of community resources available to meet client needs; ability to make independent judgments and to work with a minimum of supervision; ability to gather and successfully assess information for application real-life situations; ability to make and implement case decisions; ability to work with clients with patience and objectivity; ability to understand and interpret regulations and laws; skill in planning and organizing work; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in social work or other relevant field such as sociology, psychology or vocational rehabilitation and one (1) year of related social work experience if masters degree is in other relevant field; or possession of a bachelor's degree in social work and two (2) years of social work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

This opening may be under-filled as a Family Services Specialist II depending on the qualifications of the successful candidates and the needs of the department at the time of hire.
