Purpose: Working to expand its schoolwide engineering and design program, The Episcopal School of Dallas seeks an Upper School STEM instructor who focuses primarily on teaching engineering practices and the design process to students with a variety of backgrounds and abilities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest and background in engineering and be inspired to help develop and refine a K-12 program, curricularly and towards real-world applications and competitions, guided by the candidate’s vision, strengths, and understanding of trends in careers related to engineering.

Essential Functions:

Teach a sequence of Upper School engineering and related science or math courses, guided by the school’s mission, tenets, and hallmarks and aligned with the department’s hallmarks, scope and sequence, and expectations of academic rigor, including the following tools and experiences: 

  • the use of liberatory design concepts, tools, and processes;
  • the teaching and use of MakerSpace/FabLab equipment (e.g., 3D printers & scanners, laser cutters, CNC routers) in the design process, using computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD, or MATLAB;
  • the teaching and use of programming languages such as Java, C, or Python in engineering applications for relevant courses;
  • continued work designing and implementing an engaging and relevant science curriculum that incorporates the content, skills, and practices of the field of engineering; and
  • culminating demonstrations of learning for students that include real-world applications and competitions highlighting the students’ knowledge, skills, and practices in the field of engineering.

Support Student Learning

  • Utilize appropriate educational technology 
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues 
  • Support student learning by working with individual students before and/or after school 

Engage in reflective practice and professional development 

  • Engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels
  • Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives 

Engage in the broader school community

  • Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as a student advisor 
  • Participate in and contribute to the life of the school beyond the classroom by serving as a club advisor and/or athletic coach
