PURPOSE OF JOB:
To provide intensive English language development and content instruction to SLIFE and/or newcomer ELs at the KCPS Welcome Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish a safe and nurturing learning environment that values students' background knowledge, language and culture
Use knowledge of students' cultural backgrounds to develop and deliver engaging and rigorous lessons and implement the curriculum
Demonstrate the highest quality of instruction and apply the most current research-based instructional practices and strategies for ESL Instruction.
Build students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on oral language development.
Manage allotted learning time to maximize student learning.
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
Conduct formative and summative assessments to evaluate English language progress and adjust instruction as necessary
Work collaboratively with Program Administrator and colleagues to plan lessons, develop curriculum, create assessments, analyze data, and provide targeted interventions.
Collect and maintain complete data on student progress and evidence of language and growth and progress.
Collaborate with other program staff and grade level teachers to connect lessons and curriculum to grade level work, implement interventions, etc. through professional learning community settings to support students at their home school.
Participate in district, department, school, and program meetings and professional development, including but not limited to peer observations, coaching, PLCs, etc.
Maintain student records and documents parent contact in the district Student Information System as required by the International Welcome Center program.
Collaborate with parents or guardians regularly about student's academic achievements and behavioral celebrations or challenges.
Provide instruction and support on appropriate behavior in school while encouraging student responsibility and accountability.
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: NONE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from four-year College or University
Missouri State Certification in Elementary Education and English as a Second Language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated background in current ESOL techniques and strategies.
Demonstrated experience and/or training in working with refugees and newcomers.
Demonstrated experience and/or training in a variety of basic literacy strategies and approaches.
Teaching experience in urban schools
