Martin Luther King, Jr. School Community:
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School (MLK) offers traditional Mandarin Chinese instruction (FLESS) to all students as well as a Mandarin Immersion Program. Students may pursue a sequential Two-Way Immersion option focused on the development of biliteracy in both English and Mandarin Chinese. Or, students may choose to balance daily Chinese lessons with other core content. For Grades JK - 2, classrooms follow two learning strands, which merge together for English and Chinese instruction for Grades 3 - 5. We believe our programs prepare, enrich, and challenge our students for success as global citizens and scholars.

Putnam Avenue Upper School Community:
The Putnam Avenue Upper School is an innovative public middle school rounding out its seventh year in the Cambridge Public Schools. We are looking for a dynamic, committed educator with strong content and pedagogical knowledge, solid classroom management skills, a deep commitment to social justice and experience working in an urban school setting.

The Role:
The Mandarin Chinese literacy coach will work primarily with teachers in both schools, supporting their ongoing professional growth and learning both as individuals and in their teams. The coach will work in a collaborative manner with teachers, encouraging and inspiring growth and reflection on their own practice. The coach will draw on a depth of knowledge about best language acquisition, speaking, reading, and writing. The coach will also work directly with the principal to support data monitoring and analysis, school improvement, and intervention work. The coach will support implementation of immersion and Ni Hao (non-immersion) curriculum and the generating and sustaining of a powerful vision for lifelong literacy learning in school and beyond. The coach will work closely and cooperatively with grade level, Chinese Immersion, grade level clusters, and whole school teams of faculty including special educators, ESL educators, instructional coaches and paraprofessional aides. The coach will incorporate a variety of assessment strategies including district wide exams and formative assessment in order to inform and modify instruction and target intervention and enrichment needs. The coach will also help provide caregivers with opportunities to engage with each other and our community.

Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Chinese Literacy Coach you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred
  • Required Massachusetts License: certification in Elementary Education
  • At least 5 years of successful teaching
  • Experience teaching in a Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program
  • Proficiency in confronting issues of race and equity
  • Experience analyzing and using a wide variety of data sources
  • Awareness of the developmental needs of elementary aged learners and the strategies to meet those needs through the curriculum
  • Previous and successful experience working in a multicultural environment that includes students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, alongside the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff and student body
  • A commitment to equity in education and a belief that all students are capable of excelling in their education
