Position Function/Purpose:

Teach and develop a dance program in a middle school.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Teach a sequential dance curriculum as established by the Texas Education Agency, District Board Policies and administrative regulations.
  • Develop a Dance Handbook and articulate the plan and expectations to students, parents, administration and community.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of dance content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, diverse learning styles, assessment strategies, culturally responsive teaching and show show written preparation.
  • Increase student achievement by conducting ongoing student assessment and adjusting teaching accordingly.
  • Supervise all rehearsals before/after school as required and maintain rehearsal/performance logs.
  • Coordinate all activities that pertain to the secondary dance studies as specified by Coordinator of Dance.
  • Produce a fall production and a full length spring concert with students participating in a diverse program representing different dance styles and cultures.
  • Take part in the DISD Dance Festival and other district wide events.
  • Provide opportunities for students to take part in school and community dance opportunities including PTA, cultural programs, master classes, dance festivals, community celebrations, conferences, workshops, city holiday events, parades, pep rallies, and school talents shows.
  • Maintain an awareness of and compliance with all governing components relating to secondary dance studies such as: district teaching & learning initiatives, District Board Policies and Guidelines, and Texas Education Agency requirements.
  • Increase student retention by providing leadership and responsibility in the development and building of a sequential dance program such as: establishing vertical teams, overseeing the auditions process, developing and implementing recruitment strategies, monitoring course offerings, student eligibility and other requirements.
  • Prepare individuals and groups for college &/or career readiness by preparing portfolios, preparing students for auditions, competitions and incorporating project based learning and dance technology.
  • Attend required content staff development and demonstrate evidence of continuous growth in the assigned program.
  • Prepare and submit all required paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Develop, plan implement and monitor budget allocations for the program.
  • Manage and store equipment/costumes properly.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and costumes and turn in an inventory at the end of the year.
  • Conduct auditions and turn in a roster for the next school year to appropriate administration.
  • Exhibit student work through performances and competitions in order to recruit and develop programs.
  • Participate in local, district and state professional organizations.
  • Establish and build a parent booster club and/or support organization.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, teachers and Dance Coordinator.
  • Attend departmental fall and spring meetings and serve on at least one committee for a DISD dance event.
  • Work closely with educational, arts, and business communities to promote fine arts education.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in dance performances and competitions.
  • Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.
  • All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate.
  • Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel throughout the district is integral to this job. A remote working environment /alternate work arrangement is not an option for campus-based employees/campus-based positions because regular and punctual attendance at the worksite and performing all duties at the worksite are essential job duties for all campus-based personnel.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required of this job:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned.
  • Must have experience or demonstrated desire to work in an urban school district.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in dance history, choreography, pedagogy and dance styles such as ballet, jazz, modern and tap.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of World Music and World Dance forms.
  • Demonstrate understanding and ability to teach students with multiple learning styles and abilities.
  • Demonstrated an ability to work in a setting with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pedagogical content, process orientation and ability to demonstrate examples of correct technique to students.
  • Demonstrated ability to discuss the use of dance to develop student concepts about self, human relationships and the environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students with 21 st century teaching strategies such as Project Based Learning and technology integrated curriculum with computer programs.
  • Demonstrated proficient to advanced skill in the use of Internet, E-Mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to improve competency and teaching effectiveness by participation in professional growth opportunities and professional learning communities.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world
  • Demonstrated willingness to remain current with the latest developments in the profession
