Position Summary: The Dean of Learning and Innovation: STEM plays a visionary role at Forman. They should engage the community in thinking about the role of STEM in education and facilitate an innovative experience for students in STEM-related disciplines. This position partners with the Dean of Learning and Innovation: Humanities, the Director of Studies, and the Head of School to promote and sustain a high quality and innovative teaching and learning experience at Forman.  The ideal candidate would be forward-thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process. They take responsibility for the recruiting of faculty, professional development, curriculum development, program evaluation, and individual student success. The Dean of Learning and Innovation: STEM is part of the Senior Leadership Team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faculty

  • Oversee, in coordination with the Senior Leadership Team, the recruitment and hiring process for STEM faculty
  • In coordination with the Dean of Learning and Innovation: Humanities, organize and oversee the training and professional development of the faculty
  • Evaluate the STEM faculty utilizing both a formative and summative process
  • In coordination with the Dean of Learning and Innovation: Humanities, oversee the faculty retention process and act as an advocate for initiatives to support the faculty in their growth and development

Curriculum and Pedagogy

  • Act as a visionary for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education
  • Work with Department Chairs and the Director of Studies to develop and review the STEM curriculum
  • Work with the Director of Learning and Innovation: Humanities to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and a common framework for teaching and learning at Forman
  • Take the lead in supporting new STEM initiatives and establishing clear objectives and goals for STEM education
  • Act as a resource for teachers, facilitating a process of continual growth with a focus on helping teachers overcome challenges in the teaching and learning process
  • Lead by example in teaching one or more classes in a STEM area

Innovation

  • Act as a thought leader in the areas of teaching and learning
  • Develop and support innovation in teaching in STEM areas and assist in the development of new curriculum offerings
  • Stay abreast of the latest research in education and STEM fields and act as a conduit of this information to the faculty
  • Connect with external thoughts leaders, university researchers, and STEM professionals, and act as a conduit to connect them with the faculty and students
  • Foster a shared vision for innovation and a spirit of collaboration amongst the faculty
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of instructional technology

Student Experience

  • Monitor student progress and provide guidance and support to address the academic needs of students, facilitating a process in which every student achieves their full potential
  • Coordinate with the Director of Studies, Registrar, and Dean of Learning and Innovation: Humanities to create the academic schedule and place students appropriately
  • Communicate with parents in a timely fashion student regarding performance, providing guidance and support as appropriate
  • Provide leadership on the needs and challenges of diverse learners in STEM settings, helping faculty meet the needs of students
  • Collaborate with members of the Forman community to integrate social and emotional learning into the curriculum
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Life to support STEM learning outside of the classroom

Other Expectations: This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of School life.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5+ years of teaching experience in disciplines related to science, engineering, technology, or mathematics
  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in an academic discipline or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration
  • Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats
  • Strong verbal skills
  • Experience with working with students with different learning styles
  • Ability to engage parents and create healthy relationships with students
