  • JOB SUMMARY The school psychologist applies expertise in the areas of mental health, learning, and behavior to help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. The school psychologist utilizes problem solving with teachers, parents, and administrators to develop and implement effective intervention plans to address students' needs. The school psychologist is also a school-wide leader in the areas of wellness, evaluation, assessment and prevention.
    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
    • Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree or doctorate degree in school psychology from an accredited college or university.
    • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Psychologist Endorsement.
    • Candidates must hold a Type 73 certificate with a School Psychologist endorsement. Certification registered with Lake County ROE.
    • They also may be nationally certified by the National School Psychology Certification Board (NSPCB).
    • Experience in working with adolescents.
    • Strong leadership skills, ability to work independently and within a team.
    • Express good judgment and ability to build and maintain the confidentiality of employee, student and families and respect other sensitive information.
    • Possess strong oral and written communication skills and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work with students and adults in a positive manner.
    • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Possess mathematical and analytical skills appropriate for the position.
    • Possess common sense, problem-solving skills and reasoning ability to appropriately deal with difficult situations.
    • Possess a philosophy of prevention and intervention through implementation of tiered support for students.
    • Possess a solid working knowledge of the federal and state special education regulations.
    • Ability to set goals and establish methods for achieving these goals.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse school and community population.
    • Expertise in and application of a MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports).
    SPECIFIC DUTIES
    • Facilitate the wellness team and develop a school-wide wellness plan including suicide prevention programming, wellness day, and wellness speakers.
    • Provide direct counseling for students when needed, oversee the drop-in center in conjunction with the school counselors.
    • Facilitate individual problem solving team meetings (SST) and develop intervention plans, case management of 504 plans, and manage all paperwork needed for ISP's and 504 plans.
    • Consult on the SST problem solving meeting process with deans and counselors.
    • Facilitate and participate in a variety of meetings: Problem-solving team meetings (SST), individual Service Plan (ISP) meetings, 504 meetings.
    • Conduct all evaluations and re-evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services which include data collection through a model of tiered supports, and evaluation for building 504 plans.
    • Expertise in MTSS to design and implement academic, behavioral and social-emotional interventions.
    • Work with students and families to help manage crises such as death, illness or community trauma, provide supports to students in the development and improvement of social skills, executive functioning and anger management skills.
    • Lead school in data collection, aggregation and analysis, provide professional development to the school community on how to interpret and analyze student data and develop programs to facilitate learning and coordinate building assessment.
    • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, deans, parents, and administrators to develop and implement effective plans to address learning and behavioral concerns/difficulties, strengthen working relationships between teachers, parents, and service providers in the community.
    • Through team collaboration, design programs for children at risk of struggling at school, promote equity for all learners through an understanding of the diversity within the school community.
    • Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological and physical health, develop partnerships with parents and teachers to promote healthy school environments.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of academic and behavior management programs.
    • Identify and implement programs and strategies to improve school outcomes, and use evidence-based research to develop and/or recommend effective interventions.
    ENVIRONMENTAL DATA AND JOB HAZARDS This is a ten-month position with workdays Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Attendance is also required at evening and weekend events: Parent Orientation nights, Back to School Night, Open House, Parent Teacher Conferences, Street Scenes, Freshman Enrollment/Welcome Night, and Graduation. Chaperoning at least one activity is required.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
    • Moderate physical effort required: normally seated with freedom of movement on a regular basis, handling of supplies and materials related to events and events planning.
    • Some lifting may be required.
    • Regular typing required.
    • Employee must be able to impart and receive detailed information through verbal and written communication.
    • Employee must have the ability to work in situations involving measurable or verifiable criteria, situations dealing with people, performing under stressful situations, and working with set limits, tolerances or standards.
