Job Details

Company Description

By 2025, KIPP DC will build upon two decades of proven results to develop into a more impactful, innovative, and inclusive school system, that provides joyful, identity-affirming learning experiences so that all students and alumni achieve extraordinary outcomes. We are a network of eighteen schools educating nearly 7,000 students and employing 1,200 teachers, leaders, and staff members dedicated to our mission.

The Capital Teaching Residency is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for new teachers to develop into outstanding educators. The Capital Teaching Residency is a cornerstone program of KIPP DC. KIPP DC schools educate and support students in the District of Columbia who have historically had limited access to high quality educational options. Equipped with a KIPP DC education, our alumni are empowered to be successful in college, careers, and life. As a Capital Teaching Resident, you play an active role in our mission.

Job Description

The Capital Teaching Residency is a three year program. Residents spend the first year of this commitment-their residency year-training in a KIPP DC classroom with a lead teacher and completing relevant coursework. The majority of primary residents work in prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade, while a small number are assigned to second through fourth grade. Through our gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time. Residents have the opportunity to obtain their DC teacher licensure.

At the end of the residency year, residents who have completed all program requirements have the opportunity to interview for lead teacher positions at KIPP DC or one of our partner public charter schools in the District. These residents commit to two additional years of teaching beyond their residency year.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Following a gradual release model, take on increasingly more and different classroom responsibilities throughout the school year as determined by classroom need and resident performance
  • Internalize and teach developmentally-appropriate lesson plans to support student learning
  • Gather resources and prepare materials to ensure strong student engagement in lessons
  • Track, analyze, and use data to drive teaching and instruction
  • Implement school-wide student culture policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus
  • Conduct purposeful observations of lead and other excellent teachers
  • Participate in regular meetings with lead teacher and school coach, grade level meetings, and network wide professional development
  • Attend and actively participate in certification classes 1-2 nights per week facilitated by the Capital Teaching Residency team and complete 6-8 certification assignments throughout the year
  • Take and pass required Praxis certification examinations required for DC teaching licensure
  • Participate in and implement feedback from observations, evaluations, and feedback meetings with school leaders and the Capital Teaching Residency team
  • Take on additional responsibilities throughout the school as needed

  • A belief that educators play an integral role in students' success

  • Successful track record of collaboratively working and building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Receives and reflects on feedback, while demonstrating an eagerness to grow
  • Shows initiative in generating ideas and solutions; solves problems and achieves results beyond what is expected
  • Quickly and positively accepts and adapts to new responsibilities
  • Excellent time management skills and a detail- and results-oriented team player who is dedicated to getting the job done
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution by June 2021
