Overview

The purpose of this job is to coordinate initiatives that seek to develop and retain highly performing educators. The primary focus will be on working with with Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) to coordinate exemplary teacher candidate training, district induction, and retention of quality educators committed to the strategic goals and operational objectives of HCDE.

Responsibilities

Induction:
  • Coordinates with key senior instructional team members from Curriculum and Instruction to provide high quality continuous professional learning and support to beginning teachers during the three years of initial licensure and promote alignment with human capital strategies.
  • Complies with district, state, and federal policies, laws, and regulations regarding new teacher induction and related licensure issues.
  • Promotes instructional improvement by providing resources and support to new teachers.
  • Supports administrators, instructional coaches, and assigned mentors/induction specialists in each school in the development of new teachers.
  • Develops district-wide mentoring program for first-year teachers, including the training and monitoring of first-year mentors and coordinating inductee-mentor matches.
  • Conducts professional learning, provides resources for and/or supports school based Professional Development (PD) activities related to the induction of new teachers for principals, instructional coaches, assigned mentors/induction specialists and new teachers as requested.
  • Designs, coordinates, implements, and evaluates the district's new teacher induction program, to include the New Teacher Academy.
  • Designs, coordinates, implements, and evaluates the district's program for job-embedded teachers, including the cadre of mentor teachers.
  • Establishes rapport with new teachers and maintains monthly contract with first year beginning teachers (i.e., newsletter, chat room, etc.).
  • Conducts classroom visits and informal observations to support instructional improvement of new teachers, as appropriate.
  • Provides feedback to new teachers regarding instructional delivery and classroom management, as appropriate.
  • Provides customized professional learning to meet the unique needs of new teachers and to address the differentiated learning needs of their students.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of related portions of the district's strategic work plan to include yearly goal setting, periodic monitoring, and evaluation with follow up.
  • Assists with the development and management of annual PD budgets. Participates in regular professional learning to improve knowledge, skills, and build instructional capacity.
  • Facilitates district-wide recognition for beginning teachers and mentor teachers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or similar field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Tennessee Administrators License strongly preferred; five (5) years of successful work experience as an administrator or a teacher leadership role.
  • Experience providing teacher mentoring, teacher education training, or developing professional development programs at the K-12 and/or university level, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Maintains a valid driver's license.
