PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is primarily responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering educational programs and related services for school groups and the general public at Massie Heritage Center.

REPORTS TO: Museum Curator - Massie Heritage Center

SALARY SCHEDULE: G-9
WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Education Level: Bachelor's Degree
Preferred : Degree major in history, education, or a related field

  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • Three years experience in the delivery of public interpretive or educational programs at a museum, historic site, park, school, library, community center, or similar facility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with a variety of computer programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Demonstrate a high level of commitment to professionalism, customer service, and the mission of Massie Heritage Center and SCCPSS.
  1. Ensure that quality interpretive services are available for visitors during all hours of operation. Assist with docent work schedules and assignments accordingly.
  1. Serve as the lead worker for interpretive specialists, museum docents, support staff, and volunteers. Assist with the training of interpretive specialists, museum docents, and volunteers.
  1. Coordinate scheduled tours, interpretive programs, and routine visitor experiences. Occasionally provide special or "behind the scenes" tours of museum facilities for VIP's, school system administrators, elected officials, stakeholders, etc.
  1. Work with the museum curator to develop and deliver high-quality interpretive and educational programs. Conduct research as needed to inform the development of tours and programs. Help market, promote, and advertise tours, programs, and events to attract visitors.
  1. Assist the museum curator in customizing school group programs to meet the expectations of teachers and educational professionals and ensure that they are properly aligned with statewide curriculum requirements as needed.
  1. Conduct formal museum tours of approximately 60-90 minutes in length. Lead, instruct, and interact with visitor groups of various sizes, ages, and backgrounds, including school groups and senior groups. Engage visitors with informal interpretive services, such as impromptu conversations, demonstrations, or programs. Provide off-site interpretive and educational programs from time to time and occasionally assist with after-hours programs and events.
  1. Exhibit curiosity about the history of Savannah and Georgia and a willingness to continually improve knowledge and skills related to the museum's interpretive services. Maintain timely awareness of exhibit modifications and other changes at the museum. Attend required training seminars and educational enrichment opportunities.
  1. Open and close the museum facility in a timely manner. Report and address potential safety or security problems.
  1. Perform other related duties as required for the operation of the facility. Assist with revenue collection, the gift shop, housekeeping, record keeping, reporting, and other basic operational tasks.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents will be considered "at will." Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. 250-days, Grade 9, Non-exempt
