Department Description:

Under the direction of the Board Chief of Staff, the Board Director - Academic Policy & Engagement conducts research and analysis regarding educational policies and practices to improve student learning outcomes. This is an at-will position, and the incumbent will make policy recommendations specifically related to academic outcomes. The Board Director - Academic Policy & Engagement interacts closely with the Board Chief of Staff, other members of the Board staff and Board of Education members. Work involves considerable knowledge of the school system's organization, policies, regulations and an ability to exercise tact and sound judgment.

Salary Range: $72,585 - $135,720

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Works with PGCPS Board members and staff to identify and articulate the Board of Education policy priorities specifically related to academic outcomes;
  • Supports the Academic Achievement Committee by providing data-driven advisement regarding PGCPS Curriculum & Instruction and ensuring the established committee charter and work plan are effectively communicated and accomplished;
  • Ensures support for Board of Education committees, including, but not limited to, conducting research and analysis and information gathering regarding educational policies and practices to improve student learning outcomes;
  • Advises the Board of Education on education issues and/or policies proposed by the Chief Executive Officer or other entities;
  • Reviews Board Policies and PGCPS Administrative Procedures and advises the Board on updating and/or amending policies and creating policies aimed to enhance or improve procedures;
  • Identifies, develops, maintains and leverages strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders responsible for education policymaking; engages federal, state and local officials as subject matter experts as needed;
  • Researches and writes reports, articles, issue briefs and memoranda on issues and best practices; develops presentations on topics as required;
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws, which include conducting interviews, making hiring recommendations, staff development, staff supervision, performance evaluation, complaint resolution and problem solving;
  • Provides staff support for Board of Education standing and ad hoc committees as required;
  • Coordinates, organizes and implements special requests and initiatives, and monitors assigned projects as directed; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of current research and trends in emerging technology in education and educational policies and practices;
  • Ability to analyze academy curricula and collect feedback to support the continuous improvement of teaching and learning with specific attention to improving instructional practice and increasing student performance;
  • Ability to work effectively with all stakeholders to provide rich academic experiences for all students;
  • Ability to operate calmly under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, maintaining a high level of professionalism at all times;
  • Demonstrates integrity, tact and the utmost discretion when dealing with confidential information and sensitive situations;
  • Superior organizational, time management and project management skills; detail-oriented thinker, exhibiting strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills;
  • Documented experience in research/professional writing and editing, including position papers, policies and regulations;
  • Ability to collaboratively examine programs, administrative procedures and policies while maintaining effective working relationships with the Board office staff and other personnel;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to adapt communication styles to different audiences and situations;
  • Ability to review and analyze large volumes of information and present executive summary and report information for use by the Board of Education and school system constituencies; and
  • Knowledge of and comfort with the Microsoft Office Suite software including Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in education, public policy, or a closely related field required; Master's degree preferred. Five (5) or more years of related work experience required, preferably in a public school system or other educational institution. Familiarity with administrative and legal processes involving public school systems preferred.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Oversees and provides guidance and direction to assigned staff.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    This is a confidential, at-will position, not represented by a bargaining unit; work often requires working evenings and some weekends beyond business hours to accommodate activities such as Board meetings and representing the Board at public events.
