Manager, Translations and Bilingual Translators

This position will manage bilingual translators for the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services (ODLSS) and provide professional development to multiple stakeholder groups within the CPS community. This individual must possess a high level of proficiency in English as well as a second language, preferably Spanish, as well as maintain a proven record of leadership and supervisory experience. The coordination of written translations of district-wide documents directed to parents of students with disabilities and local communities will be required. This individual will additionally provide oral interpretation and coordinate this support upon request. The individual will also edit translations done in-house and those by outside contractors and will edit departmental documents in English and other languages.

The Manager, Translation and Bilingual Translators will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

Principal Responsibilities

  • Create and facilitate professional development for bilingual special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers related to interpreting and translations services
  • Oversee ODLSS city-wide translators/interpreters and perform, when necessary, ongoing written translations of district-wide document prepared for parents of students with disabilities and CPS communities
  • Review, update, and correct translations recurring annually
  • Create and maintain multiple language vocabulary directory for CPS commonly used terms
  • Maintain up to date data of all translations
  • Edit and proofread translations
  • Review and edit all departmental documents in English and other languages


Qualifications/Skills

  • Certification or Registration in Translation Services preferred (e.g. Illinois Court Interpreter Registry)
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Google docs, slides, and sheets
  • Able to work in a team but also self-motivated
  • Able to meet deadlines and manage high volumes of work
  • Demonstrated project and time management experience in a deadline-driven environment
  • Responsible for hiring and maintaining team of translators


In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Manager, Translation and Bilingual Translators must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred


Type of Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proven experience in translation and editing
  • Some experience in an education setting, preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Chicago Public Schools, preferred
  • Management experience of teams ten and larger


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
