Director of Technology, Merkel ISD

Summary

The Director of Technology is responsible for providing proactive leadership, vision, and management for the technology systems that support the District’s goals and values.  In addition to providing hands-on technical support, the Director is also charged with all facets of managing applications, infrastructure, security and networks throughout the District. This includes evaluation, implementation, and technology training for staff and students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field:  Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Management, etc.
  • Minimum five years hands-on experience with responsibility for managing an enterprise-scale technology environment
  • Strong experience and understanding of networking, server and storage management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience organizing and managing large-scale technology projects, implementations and upgrades
  • Basic knowledge of classroom technology implementations (interactive whiteboards, audio systems, classroom software, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Google Enterprise administration
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines
  • Ability to work occasional nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Supervisory and budget management experience prefered

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all MISD technology equipment and systems to ensure that all educational and administrative operations are secure, available, and easy to use
  • Ensure that Technology Department goals and activities align with MISD's district vision and strategic plans
  • Keep current on trends and best practices in ed tech and infrastructure management. Make sure these are incorporated in improvement plans
  • Advise staff, students & school trustees on technology policy;  lead technology/software advisory committee
  • Install and implement technology-based teaching and learning tools
  • Manage 1:1 Chromebook program 2nd - 12th grade
  • Train staff and students on appropriate technology use. Model appropriate use within the Technology Department
  • Develop and maintain district technology plan, involving all stakeholders in discussion and planning
  • Maintain appropriate data privacy and security, and work with Region 14 data security team to make continual improvement
  • Plan and implement technology initiatives as needed; train staff in the use of new systems
  • Maintain and support OneRoster SSO management. 
  • Manage and update voip phones, messaging systems and surveillance systems
  • Manage network security, including working with ESC14 WTTC team
  • Manage virtual and physical server environment, including SAN storage
  • Manage and support staff and student account provisioning and device allocation
  • Troubleshoot all technology issues, from user issues to network expansion
  • Supervise technicians; encourage personal and professional growth in tech staff
  • Supervise instructional technology staff; ensure that they are able to work successfully with teachers and students on real-life project

Model superior customer service to district personnel, students, and parents, demonstrating patience, courtesy, professional communication skills

Physical/Mental requirements

Physical exertion and movement is required to perform aspects of the job. Carrying equipment (up to 50 lbs) is required, as is manual dexterity (network wiring and computer connections.  Assistance may be available as required to perform physically demanding tasks.  Prolonged sitting is common. Verbal communication is required. 

 

Tools and Equipment

All tools and equipment are provided by the District. In addition to using basic office and classroom equipment, the position requires the occasional use of drills, saws and other mechanical tools.
