About this role...

As the Senior Director , Learning and Assessment Engineering , you are curious, clever, creative and collaborative . You are a leader focused on developing learning and assessment solutions that truly help all learners. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, State Solution Design and Developmen t, in this role you will contribut e to the strategy and tactical decision-making around ground-breaking learning and assessment solutions for various learning environments and assessment purposes . You will have the opportunity to l e ad a team of experts in computer adaptive technologies, advanced assessment and learning design s , machine learning and AI applications . Given the recent pandemic, you should bring focused energy and passion in building equitable experiences for all learners , regardless of their backgrounds or cultural identification , and across diverse learning situations . In addition, you will collaborat e across the organization , specifically with our Software and Engineering, Psychometrics, and Content Development groups to lead the design and development breakthrough solutions to complex learning and assessment challenges.

In the Senior Director, Learning and Assessment Engineering role, you must have extensive experience and advanced knowledge of learning and cognition to ensure valid outcomes of learning, particularly in diverse learning environment s, as well as the design and development of educational technologies , including adaptive assessments, adaptive learning environments , complex algorithms and learning analytics . This role will require knowledge of advanced content and data management systems and data structures , and experience working with data and systems architects, engineers, developers and data scientists. You will lead the design and build of prototypes and systems for learning and assessment experiences , often leading Tiger Teams for innovation and breakthroughs, and ensuring that requirements and business decisions support the active deployment of such technologies.

As our Senior Director , Learning and Assessment Engineering, you will be a leader and people manager whose direct reports will include assessment designers and psychometricians, and learning scientists . You should be an experienced, proven leader , highly collaborative, and a self-starte r ; and be able to communicate effectively and have a high degree of organization.
Your next challenge...

In the Senior Director, Learning and Assessment Engineering role, you will provide thought leadership for the team and NWEA . The Senior Director will:
  • Articulate a vision for the transformation of learning and assessment solutions to ensure all kids learn
  • Direct the development of innovations in adaptive learning solutions that attend to rich data collection aligned to purpose, inference, and as evidence of learning that are aligned to bringing equity in learning and that can be delivered at scale; and manage supporting staff
  • Drive exploration and prototyping of solutions for company-wide initiatives, including automations in learning and assessment design, delivery, and transactional data
  • Maintain familiarity with trends and advances in learning engineering, and recommends the adoption of appropriate technologies into solutions
  • Contribute to the strategy and tactical decision-making regarding use of algorithmic solutions to complex learning and assessment challenges
  • Build partnerships with research organizations to support visiting scholarship and research partnerships
  • Represent NWEA in the Learning Science and Engineering and Education Research communities through presentations, publications, and conference attendance
  • Communicate procedures and outcomes in clear, concise terms and language internally across the organization, to senior leaders, and to partners. This will also require someone who can build literacy and gain buy-in org-wide.
  • Manage project issues or concerns and informing executive leadership with recommended solutions.
  • Work with Product and Engineering teams to execute on the successful development and delivery of solutions within timelines and resources.

Education and e xperience ...

  • Ph.D. in Learning and Cognition, or highly related field
  • At least five years of full-time experience in the conducting increasingly advanced data analytics, data modeling in education, assessment, user experience (UX), recommender systems, or similar field.
  • Experience in innovative analytics, such as social network analyses, Bayesian inference, causal inference, simulations/model testing, and neural networks
  • Work history showing a proven capacity for thought leadership in setting a data management agenda, executing it, and using the results to shape new and existing approaches for educational challenges
  • Prior experience and knowledge of psychometric methods and statistics, including adaptive, traditional, and innovations in psychometric modeling
  • Strong project management skills with a proven ability to deliver products on time and on budget
