Job Description
The educator is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. Student achievement and growth are dependent on the work and efforts of the classroom teacher. The position is demanding, varied and complex. The classroom teacher must be a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be well trained in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
Essential Functions
- Knows the grade-level standards and can translate standards into appropriate middle school learning tasks, differentiating and sequencing activities as needed based on student-readiness, assessment data
- Places equal emphasis on developing students' procedural fluency and conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts
- Incorporates inquiry methods into lesson design
- Works with instructional coach to supplement the District's program of instruction, incorporating low-floor/high-ceiling tasks into classroom practice, observing students' level of conceptual understanding of key math ideas and problem-solving capabilities
- Structures effective cooperative learning scenarios, allowing students to engage in mathematical discourse and collaboratively problem solve
- Analyzes formative and summative assessment data to configure student groups for reteaching grade-level skills not yet mastered
- Remediates lagging skills through strategic lesson planning and use of approved resources, ability grouping students for bi-weekly RtI sessions
- Embraces the district's Collaborative Problems Solving initiative, emphasizing student-teacher relationships, to create a high-functioning classroom with a focus on learning
- Works with grade-level team and support staff to assess and help students with health, attitude, learning and behavioral problems
- Consistently involves parents in their child's education, communicating the important learning occurring in the classroom each week, explaining the relevance of a growth mindset in the math classroom, and reporting on students' academic progress
The minimum expectations for this job are as follows:
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Flexibility, organization, decision making and problem-solving skills
- Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone
- Knowledge of APSD community, computer systems, and legal requirements
- Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others
- Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect
- Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students
- Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff
- Other duties as required
The minimum requirements for this job are as follows:
- Illinois Professional Educator License K-9
- Middle Grades Math Endorsement
- Special education endorsement
- ESL endorsement
