Brief Description The Director of Communication and Community Engagement manages the day-to-day activities of the Public Information Office (PIO) and directly supervises PIO staff.  The Director focuses on a comprehensive communication program that informs and engages the school board, school division staff, parents, media, and the public about Loudoun County Public Schools' initiatives, decisions, programs, and events that ensures the integrity and consistency of school division branding.
Detailed Description The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
• Design, execute, and annually update a division-wide comprehensive communication plan that aligns with the school division's strategic plan and foster dialogue, collaboration, understanding, engagement, and trust.
• Coordinate and oversee the development of communication materials, including print, video, web, and social media.
• Serve as the primary spokesperson for the school division to promote knowledge and understanding of the school division and assist in interpreting the division's programs for the staff, parents, public, media, and other key stakeholders.
• Create and strengthen relationships with the media, lead efforts to generate media coverage, and implement procedures for reviewing and responding to media requests for information. 
• Build and maintain positive relationships with regional agency communication directors, including county government, health department, fire and safety, and law enforcement to ensure effective, coordinated communications on critical issues.
• Participate in the coordination of employee and division-wide events that showcase student and professional staff achievement.
• Supervise and develop staff within Public Information Office.
• Develop annual budget for the Public Information Office.
Job Requirements • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field; Master's degree preferred; accreditation in Public Relations (APR) preferred
• Ten years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, public relations, and staff supervision; previous experience in the public sector and/or public schools is preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of best communication practices and strategies to include print, video, news gathering, reporting, social media, web design, marketing, internal and external communications, community engagement, and crisis communications
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations and directives such as the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Family Educations Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
• Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, including emergency and critical situations and the ability to calmly communicate with audiences, internal and external, during critical situations

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

This is an Exempt position.
