    JOB DESCRIPTION

    JOB TITLE: Behavior Specialist

    REPORTS TO: Special Education Manager for Assessment

    WAGE: Exempt

    PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale

    PRIMARY PURPOSE :

    The Behavior Specialist position is designed for the educator who is committed to providing special education supports and services to eligible students who exhibit behaviors and social skills that impair their ability to profit from instruction and access the general curriculum. The Behavior Specialist is responsible for consulting with building administrators, teachers, support personnel, parents and community agencies concerning intervention strategies relating to campus programs for student with challenging behaviors in the academic setting.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:
    • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree from an accredited university
    • 2 years' experience working with programs for students with challenging behaviors
    • Acquire and maintain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certification

    Preferred:
    • Master's Degree from an accredited university
    • Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification (BCBA)
    • NCI (CPI) Trainer Certification
    • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements and level assigned (Special Education and General Education)
    • Valid Texas ESL Certification
    Plus any one of the following licensures:
    • LPC or LSSP or teaching certification

    SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
    • Knowledge of special needs of students specific to behavior
    • Knowledge of special needs of students exhibiting an Emotional Disturbance
    • Knowledge of Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
    • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction and appropriate accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities in the general education curriculum
    • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior within a self-contained environment
    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work with children with disabilities
    • Skill in consultation with teachers and parents

    MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES:
    • Provide staff development for general and special education staff regarding classroom management strategies
    • Conduct formal and informal observations of students with behavioral challenges
    • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments and provide recommendations to staff
    • Provide teacher training for individual students with behavioral challenges
    • Provide teacher and administrator support through on-site consultations and staff development
    • Assist in the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans that coordinate with student's individual diagnosis and level of functioning in the classroom
    • Provide parent training and consultation services
    • Provide transition assistance to the home campus for students returning from a more restrictive placement
    • Attend home visits when approved by supervisor
    • Other duties as assigned

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.

That number will change soon with the construction of several new facilities – including two middle schools, three ninth-grade centers and a state-of-the-art stadium that will serve the entire district – all funded by a bond referendum approved by voters in 2016.
