Durango is a diverse community and district featuring a blend of both city and rural schools. The district serves a student body with a wide range of social and academic needs, requiring not only keen awareness of those needs but also a clear vision of how to meet them.
Enrollment: 4,400 students, with a graduation rate of 92%
Staff: 352 teachers, 41 administrators, 285 support personnel
Campuses: two high schools, two middle, eight elementary, one K-5 charter school and a K-12 multi-district online school, with 2,100 students enrolled
Student demographic: 21 percent Hispanic, 61 percent white, 1 percent black, 1 percent Asian, and 6 percent Native American/Alaskan
School Board: The five-person board governs the district using Coherent Governance. Applicants must demonstrate significant understanding of and support for this method, although prior experience with Coherent Governance is not necessary.
