NATURE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Director of Alternative Education and Adult Education Programs and the Lead Teacher of the Middle School Alternatives to Suspension Program (the Program), the Instructional Paraprofessional assists with the daily supervision and instruction of middle school students in the Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows the direction of the Lead Teacher and/or Director in the performance of position duties.
  • Attends professional development and learning sessions to increase knowledge of social emotional learning to meet the needs of students.
  • Assists the Lead teacher in creating and maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to effective learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Uses time efficiently in working with groups of students or individuals so that each child is helped as needed.
  • Uses good judgement in interpreting in a lesson and supporting teacher instruction in a group situation.
  • Assists the Lead Teacher and/or Director whenever possible in meeting the needs of the students.
  • Supervises students in the classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms in a safe, structured, and positive manner that supports the expectations of the Lead Teacher and/or Director.
  • Consults the Lead Teacher and/or Director concerning behavioral expectations for the students in different situations.
  • Assists the Lead teacher in evaluating student academic and behavior progress, keeping appropriate records and preparing progress reports.
  • Develops positive working relationships and partnerships with service providers who work with students and families in the Program.
  • Participates in faculty and division meetings and other activities, as needed.
  • Establishes rapport and exhibits understanding, enthusiasm, and appropriate two-way communication with students, parents, school staff, and colleagues.
  • Prepares materials in a time efficient manner.
  • Correctly operates office machines that are necessary to carry out the preparation of materials.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher and/or Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with students, teachers, administrators, colleagues, service providers, and parents/visitors.
  • Ability to work with students who exhibit inappropriate behaviors and provide instructional interventions and behavioral support

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of at least two years of study at a four-year college or university (official transcripts required); OR 2) attainment of an Associate degree in any field (official transcripts required); OR passing the Educational Testing Services (ETS) Parapro Assessment with a Score of 455 or higher (official ETS score report required).
  • Work experience with adolescents including experience in an education setting is preferred.

START DATE: 2020 - 2021 School Year
SALARY / STIPEND: Pay Rate: $11.58 - $18.52 per hour, depending on experience. Danville School Board pays the employee cost, in full, for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and health insurance. Other benefits - sick leave and personal leave.
