NATURE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director II - Services for Exceptional Children shall assume responsibility for planning, development, coordination, and management of special education programs, services, budgets, and personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Meet regularly with the Chief Academic Officer to assure that the direction set for Exceptional Children is consistent with the strategic plan of the school division and the Board.
  • Ensure that all students with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public education through the provision of instructional programs, and related services.
  • Coordinate with elementary, middle, and high school principals to assure compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines, regulations, and requirements in regard to special education programs.
  • Convene regularly the special education advisory board.
  • Manage assignments and meets deadlines.
  • Monitor program operation to ensure compliance with guidelines, regulations, and requirements of school division and federal grant requirements.
  • Assure accurate and timely submission of all reports as requested by the local school division and the State Department of Education.
  • Establish staffing levels for school special education programs for the purpose of providing services with fiscal efficiency.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies to provide services to students.
  • Approve all requisitions, assuring that expenditures are in accordance with local, state, and federal funding requirements.
  • Provide support to instructors in the implementation of programs, including professional development, observing teachers, and giving appropriate feedback.
  • Implement and supervise the training of special education instructional paraprofessionals.
  • Oversee the Division's school nurse services.
  • Serve as Division representative on the Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT).
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding emerging special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities.
  • Present information to parents and community leaders regarding the specific programs and services available for special education students.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Proven success record as a teacher, administrator, and/or supervisor. Experience in curriculum and instruction and special education, to include administration and supervision. Experience with fiscal management and budgeting. Ability to define problems and apply problem solving techniques. Ability to effectively manage assignments and meet critical deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers, principals, parents, division-level administrators, boards, and community agencies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree or above. Holds or is eligible for a five-year renewable Virginia teaching license with endorsement in special education and/or and in educational administration and supervision. Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in special education or as an administrator supervising special education programs at the elementary, middle, and/or secondary level. Building-level administrative experience is preferred.

START DATE: As soon as possible after selection
SALARY / STIPEND: Salary Range: $89,395 - $129,623 annually, depending on experience and advanced degrees. Danville School Board pays the employee cost, in full, for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and health insurance. Other benefits - sick leave, personal, and annual (vacation) leave.
