POSITION TITLE: Substitutes for EL Specialists/Instructors
JOB STATUS: OPEN
POSTING DATE:
DEADLINE DATE: POSTING NUMBER: 001967
NATURE OF POSITION:
English Learner (EL) instructors are expected to help identified students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of English Learner (EL) students in our division. The substitute would be working with a group of students of varying cultures and different levels of English proficiency. In addition, most EL specialists/instructors in Danville are required to travel to multiple schools each day.

In the ESL classroom, a substitute could expect to see children of varying languages working together in small groups. Group sessions usually last anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minute blocks, depending on the grade level of the student. At the elementary level, teachers are required to pick up and return students in grades K-3 to classrooms at specified times (there is no bell to help you remember!), depending on the specific needs of the children. In most schools, students in fourth and fifth grade can be expected to report to the EL classroom at pre-arranged times, with the substitute waiting outside the door for the students. Middle school and high school students have pre-scheduled classes and the students report on the bell.

EL specialists leave detailed lesson plans and materials for the student to use during the lessons and the students usually know the routine and expectations in the classroom; however, the plans will help the substitute meet the needs of the student.

Elementary EL specialists report to their first school based on the school start time and move to their second school after approximately 2 hours at the initial school.
