Grant Funded Crisis Counselor

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under direction of the coordinator of school counseling, the counselor will implement a comprehensive guidance and counseling program by creating programs and activities to support the State of Nevada's School Counseling Program. The program, comprehensive in scope, preventative in design and developmental in nature focuses on what all students K-12 should know, understand and be able to do in three domain areas: academic, career and personal/social. The focus is on academic success of all students, not just those students who are motivated, supported and ready to learn. School counseling programs help all students achieve success in school and develop into contributing members of our society. The counselor performs counseling activities, which includes helping all students develop specific skills, establishing the school counseling program, working with the community, and networking with all professionals at the school and within the counseling community. Incumbent performs other duties as assigned. This specific position will play a lead role in the development and implementation of school safety crisis management and emergency response for schools and support of Safe Voice.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Crisis Counselor will serve in the role of school counselor as needed while specifically emphasizing and connecting to the school safety portions of the District's strategic plan, to promote safe, secure, supportive and welcoming environments. The crisis counselor will play a lead role in supporting the Safe Voice initiative across all WCSD schools. Safe Voice provides a 24/7 platform for anonymous tips related to student safety. In addition, the Crisis Counselor will work to ensure that schools develop and implement strong students and family support plans in the aftermath of crises, and incidents involving bullying/cyberbullying and other trauma. Students who have experienced hate or bias will have additional case management and support. Victims of Crime, underserved populations and vulnerable populations such as the LGBTQ families will be included in this connection to services. The Crisis Counselor will support the Counseling Department in District level training and connections related to this work. Grief loss and counseling/social work emphasis on roles in response will be part of the position. The Crisis Counselor will further develop community partnerships and strengthen connections within and outside of the District.

Helps all students develop skills in the areas of academic-personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development; establishes the school counseling program based upon the American School Counseling Association (ACSA) model and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program; works with the community to assist students and families in need of services outside the school's resources; and networks with all professionals at school and within the counseling community to monitor and assess needs of students at the site. Counselors support all stakeholders to help all students become career and college ready.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience in teaching that would provide the required knowledge and skills are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Master's Degree or a more advanced degree in school counseling or related field from a regionally accredited college or university with student teaching experience.

Knowledge of: Child development; behavior and characteristics of students; interpersonal relations; effective instructional practices; federal education school law; national counseling model and state counseling program standards; legal and ethical standards of counseling; career development models; application of local resources; use of technology in education; and signs and symptoms of substance abuse. Knowledge of Crisis Management and Emergency response, school based trauma supports, grief/loss, behavioral/mental health and Safe Voice.

Skill at: Listening and communicating; implementing and supporting collaborative decision making; working with culturally diverse backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with teachers, other counselors, social workers, psychologists/administrators, and other staff members; working with school age children and parents; collecting and analyzing data and drawing logical conclusions; and effective instructional methodology in the classroom.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada license with a school counselor or school social worker license. Specific Certifications related to FEMA, Crisis, /Trauma/Loss are preferred.

Additional Job Information :
This One Year Only position ending June 2021. This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.

The Crisis Counselors will respond to urgent calls from students in a crisis situation such a contemplating suicide, assault, victims of a crime committed by another student and other acts of violence, death of student, and training for staff on crisis management.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire. and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
