    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Provides career guidance, counseling services for all students. Provides related information to staff members and parents as appropriate. Assists in developing resource materials pertaining to occupational, vocational training and educational opportunities for the convenience of students, parents and staff members. Receives administrative and technical supervision from the Supervisor of Guidance Counselors, general supervision from the building principal. Responsible for the academic and socio-emotional growth of assigned counselees.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Services to Students
    • Initiates individual counseling sessions with assigned counselees.
    • Assists students in determining long-range educational plans through course selection process.
    • Interprets student information such as standardized tests, credits, progress reports and other inventories/evaluations.
    • Initiates counseling session with students needing support communicating with peers, teachers and in developing strong self-concept, problem-solving skills.
    • Continues ongoing individual counseling of students when appropriate, regarding career planning, personal-emotional adjustments and support as related to the educational needs of students.
    • Monitors students with academic deficiencies and repeated behavioral problems.
    • Demonstrates responsibility initiating student contact in classroom or homeroom, or related setting to enhance information/developmental process.
    • Works with parents in helping the student in developing educational and/or advanced training opportunities by deepened understanding of the student's needs, capacities and adjustment.
    • Provides individual and group educational/vocational counseling for the student and parents.


    Collaboration with School and Professional Staff
    • Provides consultation to school staff members for individuals or groups of students.
    • Explores insights with professional staff that suggest new ways of strengthening the educational and counseling process for an individual student or group.
    • Helps staff and administrators identify school practices which are obstacles to positive educational and counseling experiences.
    • Develops resource library of educational institutions, occupational, and vocational services and opportunities.
    • Leads staff meetings to improve communications and to increase problem-solving skills.
    • Identifies student counseling/guidance needs.
    • Provides group guidance/counseling sessions.
    • Consults with teacher, administration, parent to help develop a clearer perception of the student's needs, characteristics and behavior as related to education.
    • Participates in Planning and Placement team meetings, implements recommendations.
    • Participates with professional staff in transitional planning for students.


    Liaison and Collaboration with Outside Resources
    • Develops a network relationship with personnel in colleges, appropriate training and service agencies, business, etc.
    • Obtains pertinent records and information from community agencies important for counseling use.
    • Participates in professional conferences dealing with guidance counseling.


    Planning and Administration
    • Assists in long-range planning by advising superiors of trends in school guidance/counseling work.
    • Maintains appropriate file records.
    • Reports periodically to superiors.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • CT certification as a School Counselor.
    • Knowledge and skill required would generally be acquired with a Master's degree in Guidance Counseling.
    • Knowledge of ASCA model.
    • Thorough knowledge of school guidance counseling work methods and procedures.
    • Considerable human relations skills to work effectively with students, parents, professional school staff, and community resource persons.
    • Commitment to interdisciplinary resolution of students' needs in an educational environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify students with special educational needs.
    • Ability to assess and develop plans to assist students and families in planning educational and vocational goals and opportunities.
    • Demonstrated awareness of academic scheduling process. Ability to establish and maintain professional resources to assist students.
    • This position requires collaboration with colleagues and strong communication skills.
    • Knowledge and understanding of bilingual/ESOL students' native language and culture, preferably fluent in a second language and English.


    QUALIFICATIONS
    • Secondary school experience.
    • Familiarity with developmental guidance program, college placement, career opportunities, community liaisons, and ability to work as a team player.
    • Knowledge and experience with learner-centered school's philosophy and techniques.
    • Knowledge and ability to carry out responsibilities related to developmental guidance components.
    • Experience with team teaching organization and strategies.
    • Fluency in Spanish will be regarded as an asset.
