Role Mission: IDEA's national development team seeks a Director, Annual Giving to support its ambitious fundraising goals. A newly created position, the Director, Annual Giving is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of annual giving programs for IDEA Public Schools.

 

In their first year, the Director will create, manage, and implement a successful annual giving program in El Paso to include a robust donor onboarding, stewardship, and retention program. The Director will be responsible for ensuring IDEA El Paso has a growing, diversified and committed donor base while also working to increase our visibility in the community and create more seamless and meaningful partnerships between IDEA and our supporters. By year two (or sooner), the Director will leverage El Paso annual giving strategy and tools to partner with national and regional development leaders in rolling out annual giving campaigns across multiple IDEA regions.

You own your campaigns from start to finish and leverage your strong operating, planning, and executing skills to transform big ideas into digestible, compelling and memorable stories that people can easily consume, use and act on. You thrive off both depth and breadth and take great pleasure in going from micro to macro actions within the span of a day as you constantly recalibrate your vision and goals. You are a master project manager/operator AND you are a master vision-setter. You bring these skills into your role daily. 

 

Accountabilities:

 

National Development: Contribute to the national development team fundraising goal of $20M in support of IDEA's growth, college matriculation goals, and/or programmatic needs by June 30, 2021.
  • Develop broad and deep knowledge of programming, initiatives, and growth at IDEA Public Schools to be able to persuasively communicate IDEA's mission and programs to potential funders.
  • Plan and lead an annual giving program by cultivating a broad, diverse portfolio of supporters in El Paso.
  • Manage prospects through the donor pipeline to cultivate meaningful relationships for long-term support of IDEA by aligning donor passion to IDEA's philanthropic need.
  • Research and qualify donors and funding opportunities aligned to IDEA's growth, programmatic, and college success goals.
  • Support, attend, and participate in national development team activities, including weekly team meetings and quarterly stepbacks.
  • Participate in Advancement team-wide initiatives, events, trainings, etc. as requested.

 

Strategic Planning and Goal Management: Develop a comprehensive vision and strategy for how IDEA Public Schools builds and implements annual giving campaigns across a growing multi-region, multi-state PreK-12 charter network.
  • Apply that vision and strategy to launch an annual giving campaign in IDEA-El Paso so that the region builds an ever-growing network of diverse private and public sector champions to meet the region's fundraising goals.
  • Analyze goal progress, diagnose root causes for your stream's successes and gaps, propose course adjustments in strategy and operations.
  • Learn, optimize, and maintain use of Salesforce, the information technology system that we use to project plan, analyze progress to goal, and retain historical information about our donors.
  • Ensure all data from donor and community member engagement is 100% up to date, including but not limited to: gifts, grant reports, accurate contact information, attendance, engagement stage, opportunities, affiliated contacts, and next steps.
  • Create and manage a workflow for the Executive Director to be a partner in building donor relationships including entering external meeting contacts and notes to support regional fundraising and advocacy efforts.


Donor Experience and Annual Campaign Design: Increase donor participation and engagement in El Paso by creating and managing a comprehensive fundraising plan and appeal schedule for a broad swath of annual campaigns including but not limited to: staff giving campaign, digital giving, corporate sponsorships, and annual gifts, etc.

  • Design the arc of donor experience from first interaction to long-standing donor including but not limited to: initial gift experience, ongoing stewardship program, giving circles for ongoing donors, gift acknowledgments and stewardship activities, etc.
  • Partner with Development Operations to manage and track gift acknowledgment procedures and donor stewardship experiences.
  • Work collaboratively with Development Operations to create annual giving reports, develop custom reports, and add appeal and campaigns to Salesforce.
  • Partner with members of the national and regional development teams to coordinate appropriate solicitations including strategy and stewardship of donors and prospects.
  • Collaborate with Manager, Stewardship and Communication on collateral, marketing materials and appeals.

 

Donor Portfolio Management: Create a path towards a sustainable donor base in El Paso by acquiring first time donors and renewing existing donors, annually.
  • Own El Paso portfolio of donors including individuals who annually give less than $2,500, local foundations, corporations and sponsorships which contribute $500 to $100,000+ annually and new donors discovered through your annual campaigns.
  • Manage the cultivation of prospects through digital fundraising tools and initiate strategies to foster higher giving levels.
  • Analyze the motivations and barriers, giving capacity and networks of individual donors, foundations, and corporations to develop an annual donor strategy.
  • Conduct research to identify potential new donors and donor groups, alongside strategies to compel them to support our work.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications, proposals, LOI's as needed.
  • Oversee the development a donor stewardship program, alongside the El Paso Executive Director that will build commitment for our donors.
  • Prioritize the most critical work for your Executive Director, manage up in order to drive actions on your portfolio, and course adjust constantly in response to the constraints of time, capacity and competing commitments.

 

Regional Board and Donor Management: Ensure 100% of El Paso regional board members give financially to IDEA and lead the stewardship of the largest regional donor to secure annual payment towards commitment. 
  • Supportstewardship with IDEA's largest funder in the El Paso region by ensuring the Executive Director provides consistent, meaningful updates on IDEA's work and quarterly programmatic touchpoints with the donor occur.
  • Plan and execute regional tours, working withthe Advancement Operations team and the regional schools'teams to prepare for funder visits.
  • Create and lead board member gratitude calendar to provide board members with monthly meaningful touchpoints that connect them to the work in the region and ensure 100% experience at least one programmatic touchpoint annually.
  • Manage grant application and report deadlines in Salesforce to ensure 100% of application and grant report deadlines are met.
  • Backwards mapping grant report deadlines to include enough time for drafting deliverables with input and review from VP, Regional Development, Director, Foundation Relations and Executive Director.
  • Complete and submit clear, compelling, accurate, and timely grant reports.

 

Cross-Functional Mobilization and Leadership: Create a suite of tools, trainings, and road maps to support the launch of annual campaigns in multiple IDEA regions by 2021-2022.
  • Create the tools, infrastructure, and training to build the capacity of the regional development team to build annual giving campaigns in their respective regions.
  • Influence and compel others in development and across IDEA to build understanding and investment in your work's vital impact on our broader mission, such as managing annual giving campaigns that require activation of various functional teams and investment of regional and national leaders.
  • Work within the IDEA brand, both in visual representation and editorial style, to support the consistency of messaging across campaigns and the organization.
  • Propose, develop, and initiate strategies and channels for sharing development insights regionally, and for integrating development perspectives into programmatic decision-making.

 

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

Experience
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated track record of success developing and managing an annual campaign
  • Prior experience managing a market, portfolio of clients/constituents, or operation towards measurable goals (i.e. registration goals, sales goals, billings, media/brand mentions, recruitment goals, organizational efficiency goals, etc.)
  • Prior experience with digital fundraising campaigns, online giving, social media fundraising
  • Knowledge of the El Paso community, either as a current resident or having lived or worked in the region

  • Ability to use Microsoft suite of tools to organize and analyze priorities, goals, tasks and data. Some prior experience with Salesforce is ideal; comfort in learning and using new IT systems like Salesforce is required

Work Demands

Compensation
Salaries for people entering this role typically start between $77,000 and $95,000, commensurate with relevant qualifications and experience. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on individual and organizational goal attainment.
