NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS:

This is skilled heating, ventilating, and air conditioning control work in the Department of Schools and Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management (PBRM).

Responsible for the application of skills and knowledge involved in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in school and municipal buildings. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with the most up-to-date HVAC codes, state regulations and standard trade practices under the direction of the Director of PBRM.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling controls.

Inspects air conditioning units to ensure efficient operations.

Assists HVAC Tradesmen Technicians in the installation of new heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems; assists with repairing or replacing damaged or worn parts and equipment; assists in repairing or replacing low and high pressure liquid lines.

Diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions; installs, repairs, or replaces equipment; calibrates thermostatic controls.

Inspects and observes pressure of liquids and vapor with instrumentation to ensure efficient operation of units, makes necessary adjustments; inspects and services refrigeration equipment including refrigerators, ice machines, gas packs, and heat pumps.

Assists in maintaining chilled and hot water supply system controls.

Adjusts and maintains internal electrical and electronic control systems; cleans coils and blowers; checks motors and belt tensions.

Assists in planning and designing new installations of heating and air-conditioning system controls.

Maintains records of maintenance as required by city, state, and EPA regulations.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, processes, and techniques of the HVAC trade.

Knowledge of HVAC maintenance, repair, hazards, and safety practices common to the trade.

Working knowledge of HVAC codes and state and EPA regulations.

Working knowledge of HVAC controls and safety devices, MSDS sheets, tools of the trade and materials and refrigerant recovery equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems.

Working knowledge of computerized electrical circuits and systems as they relate to air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigerated cooling.

Ability to interpret building codes and regulations as they relate to HVAC.

Ability to assist in diagnosing problems and making recommendations, and in estimating repair costs and materials.

Ability to read blueprints, floor plans, and wiring diagrams.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and to work independently in the absence of continual supervision.

Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, municipal and school personnel, outside vendors and the general public.

Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Valid - EPA Universal Certification (Core, type, I, II, III)

Experience working with HVAC systems.

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school supplemented by course work related to HVAC systems repair and installation.
