Founding Montbello Middle School Principal

J ob Description

This principal is charged with the opportunity to develop a new middle school in the Montbello neighborhood in collaboration with a new comprehensive high school. The new leader will have a planning year, "Year-0", from the point of hire until the 2022 school year launch in order to engage the community, set a vision, hire staff, make curriculum and facility decisions, and prepare for the opening of the school.

W e seek a principal with middle school experience who is committed to the community of Montbello and the vision of launching an intentionally designed and culturally responsive middle school.

Essential Functions and Objectives:

The Principal is responsible for academic excellence and personal growth of every student, through leadership of the school's faculty, organizes school operations around improvement of instruction by maintaining a safe and orderly environment, upholds state laws, contracts and District Policies, manages personnel, maintains facility to provide a quality learning environment, efficiently manages financial and facility resources, establishes effective public relationships, and coordinates effective instructional programs with a master schedule.

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications:

- B achelor's Degree required.

- M aster's Degree and previous leadership experience preferred.

- A current, valid State of Colorado Principal License (professional or provisional) in place by the time the position starts.

- A lternative licensure is an option for candidates with demonstrated school leadership experience who require licensure and additional coursework.

- E xperience in serving at-risk students and the needs of second language learners required. Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.

- P revious middle school leadership experience preferred.

The school leader must be able to demonstrate the School Leader Competencies in the areas that are aligned to the DPS Schools Leadership Framework, as well as exhibit strengths in creating a new school environment for middle school students responsive to the needs and wants of the community:
  1. Instructional Expertise: Builds, develops and empowers the school's Instructional Leadership Team to ensure all students engage in joyful, rigorous and personalized learning and demonstrate high academic achievement.

  3. People and Culture: Recruits, retains and grows a highly effective leadership team and staff, developing a culture of continuous learning that maximizes staff morale and performance. The greatest indicator of student success is an effective teacher; therefore, in starting a new school, this leader must be versed in both recruiting and developing effective teachers through a variety of methods.
  4. Community and Equity: Leads a positive, inclusive school community that supports the development of the Whole Child and meaningfully engages families and community members. The Montbello MS principal must lead for the development of a unifying school culture that values equity and empowerment for all stakeholders. In addition, this school leader must be attentive to the larger community's needs by aligning the school's programming and priorities to those needs. This type of leadership requires the school leader to intimately know, affirm, and partner with a variety of community members and organizations, such as business owners, community leaders, and elders, non-profit organizations, community centers, churches, and other organizations.
  5. Personal and Values: Inspires others, is values-driven, and exhibits reflective and resilient leadership. This school leader motivates and galvanizes the community through their own words and actions.
  6. Operational and Organizational: Achieves school goals by driving results, maximizing resources and ensuring effective management of school systems and operations. This school leader must have an entrepreneurial spirit with strong change management experience.
