The pay rate is an additional $5 per hour over the appropriate paraprofessional step (Class 1). The selected candidate would be paid this rate when they are interpreting for a deaf/hard of hearing student, and paid the regular paraprofessional pay rate when they are not.

Interpreter for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students

Qualifications: 1. Interpreter certification via the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board
2. Have training necessary to provide interpretation for students using alternate modes of communication (sign language, etc.).
3. Has experience working with deaf/hearing impaired students in education settings.
4. Strong communication skills

Reports To: Director Special Services, Building Principal or designee
Supervises: None

Job Goal: The educational interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school
system. The educational interpreter provides interpreting and support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing being educated in the school district. Other duties that may be performed when
they do not interfere with interpreting include tutoring, participation in meetings and being an active member of the school's educational team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
  • Interprets for and tutors students with deafness or hearing impairments. Services will be provided within the classroom or other educationally related environments.Communicates to the Deaf Educator assignments and academic or other needs of the students.Modify lessons under the teacher's direction for student success.Spends the majority of time working directly with individual children; spends minimal time on typing, making copies, correcting papers and other clerical tasks.The primary role of the educational interpreter is to serve as a facilitator of communication: to interpret. When the need arises for both interpreting and some other task (e.g. recess/hall supervision, tutoring, etc.), interpreting takes priority and should not be interrupted.Assist with the setup of note taking services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, when necessary and appropriate.Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.Serve as a liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance. (Compensation by the school district for interpreting services provided outside of normal school hours will be agreed upon in advance.)At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.Use any scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.Maintain confidentiality: "What goes on in the classroom stays in the classroom."Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.Participates in necessary inservice training programs as assigned and takes responsibility for keeping current with training and certification requirements.Perform other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be established by the Board with consultation and recommendation of the Building Principal. Designated by Contract and funding source.
Evaluation: The Director of Special Services, Building Principal, or designee, shall evaluate the performance of this position.
