Adult Educator Role

This position reports to the Washington Irving Educational Center in a midsize urban school district located in the Capital region of Upstate New York. Washington Irving Educational Center is located in the heart of Schenectady's Hamilton Hill neighborhood and has been serving the adult population of Schenectady county for over 50 years. Schenectady City School's alternative education program is one of the largest and most active centers in New York State. The Adult Educator will facilitate a positive learning climate that is open, caring and rigorous. This position requires a high degree of patience, compassion and responsiveness to student experiences.

Adult Educator Expectations
  • Implement adult basic education program, which includes English as a second language, reading, mathematics, life skills, and vocational education programs;
  • Support high school equivalency program for adults (age 21 and older) and for alternative high school students (ages 16 to 20);
  • Work closely with building administrators;
  • Adapt teaching methods based on students lived experiences;
  • Teach Adult Basic Education and TASC preparation courses using culturally responsive instruction methods;
  • Responsible for teaching the TASC test areas (reading, writing, social studies, science and math) or adult basic education skills areas (reading, writing, math);
  • Plan and prepares relevant and practical class lessons and monitors student's performance;
  • Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, that include group or individualized instruction as well as computer programs that help students make learning gains;
  • Creating a climate that encourages and supports learning;
  • May lead and direct the work of others;
  • Responsible for effective classroom management that enhances student learning
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director;
  • Assess student achievement in class and modify instruction accordingly;

Minimum Qualifications
  1. 4-year degree with NYSED certification in Adult Education (can be earned/maintained after being hired)
  2. Master's degree in Education preferred;
  3. K-12 certification preferred.
