Job Summary
The Youth Development Tutor provides academic tutoring to eligible Alaska Native/American Indian students in and out of the classroom. This may include implementing individual specific educational plans and keeping student records and tracking academic progress. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.A minimum of 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, or a passing score of 459 or better on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment, within 45 calendar days of hire date.Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures.Demonstrated competency in the assigned academic areas.Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.Excellent communication and customer service skills.Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.

The following are preferred:
  1. Ability to speak, write and read Yugtun (Yup'ik).Experience in working with children in an instructional environment, preferably with Alaska Native students.Ability to serve as a liaison between the school, teachers, students, and parents or guardians.Willingness to train to use online curriculum instruction.Willingness to attend parent/teacher conferences and meetings with parents or guardians of Native students.Ability to maintain effective communication with students, parents/guardians, teachers, school administration, and members of the community. Ability to use proper English grammar, vocabulary, and assist students with writing using proper English.Ability to effectively present instruction, and/or information to students, staff, parents, administrators, and the public.Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.Ability to effectively present instruction in algebra, geometry, and basic mathematical concepts, including math exemplars and written problems.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Provides academic tutoring in core subjects, primarily reading, writing, and mathematics.Collaborates with classroom teacher(s) in determining the needs of students.Designs individual tutorial plans for students.Implements and evaluates individual tutorial plans, maintains and evaluates student records, and tracks academic progress.Collects and enters data required by Title VII and the Anchorage School District.Provides community outreach and connection with community agencies and ASD services that address students' social and academic needs.Coordinates, plans, and/or develops cultural activities with ASD and other agencies.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
