    Assistant Director of Facilities, Operations, and Maintenance
    The Assistant Director of Facilities is responsible for sharing in the leadership of Scarsdale's buildings and grounds department, inclusive of our 7 schools, District Office, athletics fields and facilities, and transportation compound. Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the successful candidate must have the ability to thoughtfully and creatively carry out a program of buildings and grounds maintenance and improvement. Additionally, the Assistant Director will demonstrate:
    • thorough knowledge of school district buildings and grounds maintenance operations and practices;
    • thorough knowledge of safety regulations, procedures and security in the workplace and public buildings;
    • thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision;
    • working knowledge of buildings and grounds maintenance and repair practices and procedures;
    • working knowledge of safety precautions and practices associated with buildings and grounds maintenance and repair work;
    • working knowledge of the practices and techniques of one or more of the skilled trades;
    • the ability to organize, prepare and maintain accurate records and files, and to inspect the work of buildings, tradespersons and contractors to ensure compliance with contract specifications, as well as, applicable codes and regulations;
    • the ability to understand, interpret, and follow instructions, plans, diagrams, specifications and blueprints, and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
    This is a Westchester County, Competitive Class, Civil Service position. All candidates must either currently hold permanent status in the title of Assistant Director of Facilities, Operations, and Maintenance, or be reachable on the current WC Assistant Director of Facilities, Operations, and Maintenance list.     Position Purpose
    Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities, the incumbent is responsible for assisting the Director in managing the personnel and leading the processes associated with maintaining and improving the District's facilities, infrastructure, and physical plant.

    Essential Functions
    • Exercises direction and supervision over the operations and personnel involved in the buildings and grounds department
    • Assists in the development and implemetation of policies and procedures to ensure the preventive maintenance program is carried out to ensure buildings, grounds and equipment are maintained in a safe operating condition
    • Directs, assigns, trains and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel
    • Creates and maintains records and reports relative to operations and the programs supervised
    • Discusses maintenance, repair and operational needs with school administrator(s)
    • Works with construction managers, architects and/or engineers to implement and complete capital improvement projects and other long-term plans
    • Ensures that preventive maintenance is performed and meets regularly with subordinates to discuss repairs on equipment, including plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems
    • Ensures that custodial, maintenance and facilities employees receive necessary in-service training
    • Approves purchase requests of cleaning supplies, fuel and parts for equipment and buildings
    • Inspects painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other mechanical maintenance and construction work performed by private contractors, custodial, or maintenance employees to ensure work is in compliance with contract specifications, as well as, applicable codes and regulations
    • Assists the Director in ensuring that inspections are performed and tests of security systems, safety lighting, fire extinguishers, fire alarm system, doors, and eyewash stations are completed to ensure proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and regulations
    • Participates in interviewing, hiring, evaluating and disciplining departmental personnel
    • Works with the Director to establish policies and procedures regarding work schedules, vacation, personal and sick leave requests and ensures employees have adequate leave accruals
    • Responds to inquiries from employees, school administrators and the public regarding school district buildings and grounds activities
    • May be asked to attend School Board meetings and other committee meetings, as required, to address issues specific to the buildings and grounds department

    Additional Duties
    Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director or by the Assistant Superintendent for Business.

    Equipment
    Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, and telephone.

    Travel Requirements
    Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
    Work in standard office and school building environments.

    Qualifications Profile
    Graduation from high school or possession of a high scho ol equivalency diploma and one of the following:
    • (A) An Associate's or higher-level degree in School Facilities Management, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Construction Technology or a closely related field, and one (1) year of work experience where the primary function was in building construction, maintenance, operations or repair work in one or more specialty trades*; or
    • (B) Three years of experience as described in (A).
    • A Bachelor's or higher level degree in School Facilities Management, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Construction Technology may be substitute for the one (1) yea rof work experience.

    *Specialty trades include journey level experience as a carpenter, electrician, mason, plumber and/or heating, ventilating and air conditioner installers.
    • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
