School Division Searching for a Superintendent

The Position – The Prince William County School Board seeks an educational leader to serve as Superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS). The next Superintendent will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated School Board, a highly accomplished staff, and a supportive and engaged community to advance the work of our nationally recognized school division and provide an educational program that prepares all students for success. The start date for the new Superintendent will be July 1, 2021. PWCS is an equal opportunity employer.

The Division – Prince William County Public Schools is located 35 miles southwest of Washington, DC and 80 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. PWCS enrollment is approximately 89,000 students, drawn from a diverse school community, making PWCS the second largest of 138 school divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the 35th largest in the nation. The School Division has a history of growing on average by 2,000 students per year. There are currently 61 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, 13 high schools, 2 traditional schools, 5 special education schools, 2 alternative schools, and 2 Governor’s Schools attended by PWCS students. A new high school and a new middle school are scheduled to open for the 2021-22 school year. PWCS also offers a wide range of specialty and career and technical education programs.

The governing body of PWCS is the School Board, comprised of eight School Board members who are elected for four-year terms. One member represents each of the School Division’s seven magisterial districts, and one member serves as a Chairman At-Large. Qualifications / Licensure – The School Board seeks an educational leader with the qualifications and skills needed to implement the Division’s commitment to “Provide a World Class Education” for ALL of our students. The successful candidate will be known for integrity and character and will be respected as a leader who can successfully engage, motivate, and manage a diverse and progressive system that is growing at a rapid pace. Applicants are required to hold or provide evidence of eligibility for a Virginia Division Superintendent License. Candidates are encouraged to obtain information about requirements for certification from the Virginia Department of Education.

The salary and benefits for the successful candidate will be nationally competitive and determined upon proven experience, qualifications, and fulfillment of school board criteria. The new Superintendent will assume the position on July 1, 2020.
