Head Custodian I at Noah Wallace Elementary School

Position is 40 hours per week, full year; 15 sick days, 3 personal days, 10 vacation days; $30,000 Life Insurance and Long Term Disability; 13 paid holidays; Full medical, dental, vision and prescription benefits; 401A Pension plan

Qualifications:
  • Candidate should hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Candidate should have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in building care and cleaning or maintenance operations, or an equivalent combination of both which will provide knowledge, skill and ability required.
  • Candidate should demonstrate an ability to communicate with administration and staff.
  • Candidate should demonstrate an ability to train, supervise and evaluate employees.
  • Candidate should demonstrate an ability to work independently to resolve issues.
  • Candidate should have at least one-year experience as a school custodian.
  • Consideration will be given to the following:
    • References that indicate the candidate demonstrate courtesy in dealing with students, parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, and the general public.
    • References that indicate the candidate possesses thorough knowledge of the methods, material and equipment used in building care and cleaning, the ability to do mechanical repairs, follow oral and written instructions, and possesses supervisory ability.
    • Must be in good physical health to successfully perform the duties required.
    • Knowledge of computer assisted HVAC systems.
SUPERVISES: Custodians, Shift Supervisor, Cleaners, Student summer workers, and community service workers, as assigned.

SALARY: $33.05-$37.27 per hour depending on experience

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The head custodian is responsible for the supervision of custodial cleaning activities for school building(s) and school grounds. This includes supervising custodians, performing custodial work, and performing maintenance work and related tasks as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Advises Director of School Facilities of major maintenance problems.
  • Keeps required records utilizing computer technology including employee timesheets.
  • Participates in the establishment of performance of standards for subordinates and takes corrective measures to implement these standards.
  • Assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of all custodians assigned for conformance with established cleaning standards on a daily basis, and is responsible for daily and nightly checks of custodians' work areas.
  • Recommends to the Director of School Facilities, based on evaluation of subordinate employees, continued employment of probationary subordinate employees.
  • Trains employees on proper cleaning, maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Assists in the establishment of custodian work schedules.
  • Coordinates vacation schedules for all assigned custodian.
  • Daily checks with school principal for emergency and necessary work for professional staff.
  • Insures that all overtime work is equitably distributed among off-duty qualified custodians.
  • Schedules the program for lawn and shrub care in and around schools.
  • Supervises and assists with snow removal and sanding of icy conditions of grounds.
  • Supervises and helps prepare building for school activities.
  • Performs related supervisory duties as assigned.
Custodial Responsibilities
  • Requisitions and maintains an inventory of cleaning material and equipment.
  • Is responsible for securing the school building every day and night.
  • Is available in emergency situations involving the school building(s) such as power failures, heating and ventilation problems, plumbing, or any related problems that arise.
  • Inspects heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems for proper operation and makes minor repairs.
  • Maintains a regular servicing schedule for all motors, burners, clean-out traps, valves, and strainers.
  • Performs minor maintenance as required such as fixing locks, replacing window panes, resurfacing desks, patching plaster, painting, fixing faucets, and making general repairs.
  • Conducts regular safety inspections of the building(s) and grounds.
  • Loads and unloads trucks or other vehicles and provides assistance in the moving of heavy equipment and materials.
  • Assists in receiving, storing, and distributing materials for instruction and school lunch programs.
  • Sweeps, dusts, mops, scrubs interior walls and floors, polishes furniture, and raises and lowers the flag daily.
  • Performs related custodial duties as assigned.
Building Operation
  • Operates computer-controlled systems.
  • Oversees security system.
  • Assists with the development of school and capital budgets.
  • Coordinates with the school staff for after school building use.
  • Maintains all inventories of supplies and building maintenance records.
