Position Description:
The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and supports Chief level leaders with communication, strategy and collaboration. Working closely with the Executive Directors and Board of Directors to set strategy and build key relationships for network development. The Chief of Staff is a critical lever in providing strategic and operational support to the CEO. This position provides an unparalleled opportunity for an individual with superior critical thinking, organization, and communication to maximize Distinctive Schools' impact and future growth while gaining an in-depth understanding of the organization's operations. Due to the high-stakes nature of this position, the candidate must demonstrate exceptional judgment, professionalism, and poise at all times. The ideal candidate for this position has a proven ability to (1) cultivate in others a sense of ownership for solving problems, (2) build strong partnerships and collaborations that span the public and private sectors, (3) measure the success of development efforts, and (4) supervise and develop staff with a culture first mindset as an external extension of the CEO and Chief Level team. This person will:
- Attend meetings and conduct presentations as needed, as a trusted face of of the CEO, representing the organization
- Act as DS team "culture" lead, ensure DS is a great place to grow and work by planning and developing values-aligned strategies for team-building and interpersonal appreciation, and proactively identifying opportunities to become a healthy, inclusive, high-performance organization
- Lead alongside the CEO to ensure organizational values on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are driven, communicated and implemented across the organization
- Anticipates and solves for challenges to ensure the most strategic use of CEO and team time
- Provides strategic advice to the CEO on ways to improve team operations and processes
- Works closely, effectively, and confidentially with the CEO to keep him well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities including key decisions and needed actions
- Shadows CEO in key internal and external meetings and events, including those with peer executives, current or potential partners, and funders
- Provides a bridge for effective and regular communication between the CEO and team, including communicating team wants, needs, concerns, ideas in an effective and efficient way
- Attend Board Meetings and support ongoing/frequent board engagement strategies
- Work with network leadership to maximize efficiency and productivity, leading day-to-day network strategy as an extension of the CEO
- Design, lead, plan, and convene weekly and monthly leadership team collaboration meetings/strategy workshops and professional development opportunities
- Develop work-plans for senior leaders to ensure project management success
- Manage relationships with all external stakeholders in partnership and on behalf of the CEO
- Develop and lead growth strategy plans for the organization identifying growth opportunities and risks
- Use an operational focus to work with the Strategy Team to form new partnerships with organizations, resulting in the alignment of resources devoted to advancement of best personalized learning strategies
- Research what other organizations across the country are doing to build shared responsibility for improving public education in order to constantly build network efficiency
- Support and develop talent and management coaching strategies and approaches
- Consult and collaborate on project management of executive director initiatives, as needed
- Work closely with the Executive Assistant to set the strategic direction of the CEO's calendar to ensure that it aligns with their priorities
- Serve as a key contact to local and regional staff teams, particularly as it relates to fielding questions, coordinating projects, and downloading key information
- Manage and support initiatives owned by the office of the CEO and Chief Level Team
- Oversee various ad-hoc projects with and for the CEO and Chief Level Team
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Advanced Degree
- Director-level experience in a related nonprofit
- Ability to think strategically and architect organization- and program-level strategy
- Effectively present and communicator to multiple constituencies
- Must thrive in an entrepreneurial environment where staff play multiple roles, balance conflicting priorities, and respond to organizational needs
- Must be a self starter and able to take initiative quickly
- Passion for improving educational opportunities for young people
- Empathy and culture-first leadership is a must
