General Statement of Duties:

Position is responsible for coaching student athletes in competitive swimming techniques to prepare them for athletic competition and to motivate student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport. Position provides leadership, supervision and coaching for the aquatics program at the high school level. Position is responsible for all program participants, assistants, and ancillary members of the team. Encourages good sportsmanship, swimming and team skills and develop lifelong learning skills in each student athlete.


Essential Duties:
  • Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport;
  • Assesses swimmer's skills, provide personal instruction for the development of lifetime swimming skills; and assigns team positions;
  • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development;
  • Works with the athletics director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition;
  • Coaches and instructs swimmers, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport;
  • Observes swimmers, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times;
  • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met;
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury;
  • Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their student;
  • Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program;
  • Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards swimmers, officials, and spectators;
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations;
  • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms;
  • Works with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season;
  • Participates in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies;
  • Maintains VHSL eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records;
  • Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the home and the school and with other school staff;
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence;
  • Respects the home responsibility of parents for their children;
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities ;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school division's policies and practices.


Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of modern practices, techniques, and methods of teaching; effective supervision and instruction of other staff and volunteers; the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities; ability to apply modern methods and principles of education for program participants; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of swimmers; maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students. Requires effective written and oral communication skills. Some experience as a competitive swimming coach at the high school or college level preferred. Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.

Previous experience as a swim coach. Carries CPR/First Aid Certification/Training and is current on Lifeguard training and certification; must have current VHSL coaching education certification.

Additional Information:
Minimum Salary - $1654.19/year.
