Job Summary

Ensures unity of command as part of the School Police Department chain of command. Serves as commanding officer for School Resource Officers and School Police Sergeants.

Essential Functions

Depending upon the specific position, incumbents may perform some or all of the functions in the section below. Percentage of time spent performing essential functions may vary across positions.

1. Recruits, approves, processes, and makes hiring decisions for new School Police Officers.
2. Supervises and trains assigned staff, conducts performance appraisals, makes employment and discipline recommendations, and coordinates work assignments.
3. Serves as Commanding Officer for School Police personnel or Communications Center personnel.
4. Coordinates and delivers training to School Police personnel to meet Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Accreditation requirements.
5. Assists Police Chief with administrative functions such as interactions with Principals on jurisdiction issues, researching implications of new legislation on departmental procedures, and providing in-service training.
6. Coordinates security associated with school special events such as sporting events and dances. Establishes secondary employment staffing requirements, schedules, and Jacksonville Sheriff's Office zone coverage. Communicates final event statistics to Superintendant immediately following events.
7. Ensures consistent operations of School Police vehicle fleet. Coordinates vehicle maintenance, repairs and inspections.
8. Researches, develops, recommends, and submits for approval, policies and procedures to implement the Accreditation process.
9. Ensures that Communication Center and associated personnel meet new state law requirements such as physical space (solid walls with no windows, no ceiling crawl space), access to electrical and computer wiring, and available technology.
10. Serves as liaison with School Police Department and school Principals on school security, incidents, and jurisdiction issues.
11. Reviews and approves incident reports written by School Police Officers.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.

Experience: Four (4) years of police supervisory experience

Certifications & Licenses: Current State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Certificate as a Law Enforcement Officer.

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and case decisions related to school security
• Knowledge of processes for managing and planning patrols, investigations, crime prevention, youth services, and

tactical and event planning
• Knowledge of modern personnel management practices and procedures related to selection, training, career

development, scheduling, discipline, and performance evaluation
• Knowledge of complex research and reporting methods
• Strong shift, unit, or program planning, management, and coordination skills
• Strong coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong creative problem solving skills
• Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Strong word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software skills
