BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess an earned master's degree in school counseling from an approved school counselor education program. Must uphold the ethical and professional standards of professional counseling practices and support and maintain the development of a school counseling program that is based on the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) National Model.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Meets Virginia requirements for certification with an endorsement as a school counselor to include a minimum of 100 clock hours of practicum experience in one setting (PreK-6 or 7-12) and an internship of 100 hours minimum in a different setting (PreK-6 or 7-12). For school counselors without previous counseling experience, it is recommended that the internship have been completed at the elementary school level.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

The school counselor supports the academic success of all students by the development and management of a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design and developmental in nature. Elementary school counselors plan, design and implement a school counseling program that is in alignment with national, state, local standards and individual school's needs. Elementary school counselors deliver, manage and evaluate their services using the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model as the guide. Elementary counselors function as leaders, advocates, collaborators and agents of systemic change in support of all students' needs. Elementary school counselors help ensure that effective strategies are employed to encourage the maximum development of academic, career and personal/social goals of all students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in providing a World-Class Education.

Work within the beliefs, philosophy, and mission statements that have been approved and align with the school, school district and state mission.

Plan, organize and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program based upon the developmental and individual needs of students and in collaboration with building level administrators.

Develop a written plan for effective delivery of services based on state and local standards, current school data and individual student's needs.

Advocate for the elimination of barriers to access and assure a rigorous education for all students.

Maintain current communication and appropriate resources for stakeholders.

Apply legal and ethical standards of the role of the school counselor.

Deliver counseling services through classroom instruction, interdisciplinary curriculum, group activities, individual or small group appraisal and advisement, consultation, individual and small group counseling, crisis counseling/response and peer facilitation.

Collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational specialists to develop academic, career and personal/social skills for all students.

Apply professional training to collect, analyze and interpret and use relevant data to guide students' academic, social and career achievement.

Develop an effective referral and follow up process with in-house support and outside agencies.

Provide leadership, intervention and support when crisis counseling is appropriate.

Manage the school counseling program through the effective use of calendars, action plans, and management agreements.

Devote no less than 60% of their time providing direct services to students with the remaining time devoted to program management, system support and accountability.

Collaborate with parents, teachers and administrators to ensure the effective implementation of the school counseling program and reflection of the school's goals.

Implement data-driven action plans that align with school and comprehensive counseling program goals, impact the issues of closing the gap and allow effective monitoring of student's progress.
Utilize data to perform yearly program audit to evaluate the schools counseling program's effectiveness.

Collect and use data to direct the program needs and direction.

Provide regular result reports to administrators, teachers and appropriate shareholders.

Monitor impact issues such as academic achievement, discipline referrals, attendance and assist with and support appropriate interventions.

Complete other duties as assigned that align with the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) recommendations.
