  • JOB TITLE: Construction Technology Language Arts Teacher
    LOCATION: Sheridan High School
    WORK YEAR: 187 days
    WORK STATUS: Licensed, Full Time Exempt
    REPORTS TO: Building Principal

    This position is for the 2020/2021 school year and is Temporary. Per Master Agreement, when a position is filled after the opening of school by an individual who was not employed by the District in the previous school year, that employee will receive a one-year temporary contract.

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    The Construction Technology Language Arts teacher is responsible for developing students' entry-level language arts skills related to reading blueprints, estimating building codes and ordinances, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry construction industry applications, and the safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment. In addition to teaching construction content, the teacher will need to become familiar with the construction and building trades building process, including creating relationships with external stakeholders, partners, contractors, and suppliers.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Align program curriculum with current industry partners and requirements
    • Design, implement and evaluate the language arts curriculum aligned to construction processes within the program
    • Plan and provide theoretical instruction and internship site experiences which reflect an understanding of the program's philosophy, objectives, and curriculum
    • Select appropriate learning experiences based on an understanding of the program's curricular plans
    • Select course content, prepare lesson plans, and confer with and utilize trade professionals
    • Prepare supervise and evaluate student assessments
    • Participate in career advising and guidance of students
    • Serve on committees that contribute to the overall planning and guidance of the program; the continuing development and evaluation of the curriculum of the school; the development and implementation of the philosophy and objectives of the school; and the improvement of the educational program
    • Participate in meetings, in-services, workshops, and other professional meetings. Serve as a resource to members of the community and other faculty members
    • Participate in budget planning and administer the program budget
    • Identify and advocate for services needed by students and staff
    • Maintain the program approval issued by the Colorado Community College System
    • Teach all standards and requirements outlined in the individual course syllabi and program material
    • Maintain an equitable classroom environment that supports student learning and growth
    • Foster the program's responsiveness to community and/or employer needs
    • Incorporate and instruct literacy concepts as they pertain to the construction industry
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or appointed designees

    Classroom duties include:
    • Develop and coordinate the use of educational materials, equipment, and/or facilities
    • Prepare, instruct, test and tutor students
    • Travel with student cohorts on Fridays to different trade and construction sites
    • Become familiar with and carry out course description activities and objectives of assigned courses
    • Maintain student databases aligned with Perkins performance metrics and the Council of Operational Education (COE) requirements
    • Integrate the Career and Technical Student Organization into program curriculum delivery

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Education or Formal Training
    • Bachelor's degree in English or other language arts-related discipline required
    • Applicant must possess or be eligible to obtain a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) license with English language arts endorsement and Career and Technical Education (CTE) credential (CTE Architecture and Construction or Integrated Communications) within 90 days of employment. A separate CTE credential is not required if candidate holds a CDE license with an endorsement in Technology Education. (Refer to CDE worksheets for endorsement criteria.)

    Minimum Experience
    • Prior teaching experience is preferred
    • Minimum of 3 years industry-related work experience

    Skill Requirements
    • As a condition of employment, the individual selected for this position will be expected to complete the Sheridan-sponsored Linguistically Diverse Educator (LDE) Certificate Program within the first three years of employment
    • Must be a team player with strong interpersonal, organizational, and program management skills

    GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of content and teaching methods in area(s) of teaching assignment.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental needs of students.

    • Demonstrated understanding and empathy necessary for working with students.

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Working on a home-building site may include working outdoors, lifting up to 50lbs and using construction tools.

    CLEARANCE:
    Must clear background check through the CBI and the FBI through Fingerprint submission.

    SALARY:
    Placement on Licensed Teacher salary schedule based upon highest degree earned, college credits earned after highest degree and previous teaching experience. Current Board approved Licensed Teacher salary schedule, placement policy and Master Agreement are available for review on our district website at www.ssd2.org. Highest initial step placement on the Licensed Salary Schedule is Step 9.

    The annual salary for this position will be determined by number of hours scheduled to work each day and number of days scheduled to work each year. The computed annual salary will be spread out in equal payments over 12 months. Sheridan School District employees are paid once a month on the 1st working day of the month that is not a weekend day or holiday.

    BENEFITS:
    Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 10% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA and the District contributes 20.9% in addition to employee contribution.
