General Description

Responsible for the supervision and safety of children on a special educationschool bus during its operation. Assists students aboard an existing school bus using special equipment or devices based on the unique needs of specific children in relationship to their disabilities. Performs functions with little or no supervision. Bus attendants should be knowledgeable about child development for children with and without special needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serves as an attendant on the school bus. Assists students who are ambulatory or non-ambulatory aboard and exiting school bus; uses special equipment or special devices (e.g., power lifts, child safety restraint systems such as child safety seat, safety vests and integrated seats, related securement systems, including vest mounting and safety belts, wheelchairs and wheelchair tie downs and occupant restraint systems) based on the unique needs of specific children in relationship to their disabilities and confidential transportation requirements as indicated on the IEP. Participates in evacuation and practice evacuation drills.
  • Manages student behavior and enforces safety and conduct regulations using age-appropriate physical handling, communication and behavior management techniques.
  • Provides basic first-aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for special needs students on the vehicle (e.g., apnea, asthma or other respiratory conditions, life threatening allergies and their triggers, assistive devices, communicable diseases, g-tubes, shunts, oxygen, technological dependence, tracheostomy tubes, medical devices, medically complex and fragile conditions, uncontrollable seizure disorders and “Do Not Resuscitate” DNR orders).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and related local exceptional education and school board policies. Some knowledge of first aid procedures including CPR. Demonstrated ability to maintain bus discipline, and provide constant attention and assistance to a number of children at the same time, especially children with special health conditions or disabilities. Demonstrated ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting children. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures and prepare basic reports. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents tactfully, calmly and compassionately in sensitive, stressful situations in a confidential manner.

Requirements

Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must successfully complete CPR and basic first-aid course upon entry into the position (CCPS will provide training).
This is a part-time temporary position. (no benefits)
