Summary Description

Under the supervision of the school site administrator, the Online Virtual School Teacher (Teacher) is responsible for providing a positive educational atmosphere in an online environment where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, psychological growth; and for organizing and implementing an instructional program that results in students achieving academic success in accordance with District and state policies and laws. The Teacher is responsible for providing guidance, instruction, and support to manage the online learning process and focus on students' individual needs. The Teacher will monitor student progress through interactive virtual lessons, daily assignments, and work actively with students and parents to advance each child's online learning.

Teaching in a virtual/online environment requires a strong educational background and a firm understanding of how best practices from a regular classroom can be applied to this interactive model. Though the primary focus is on academic core instruction, teachers must be comfortable with using technology and supporting new users of technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions and duties listed below are intended to guide the various types of work that may be performed, and are not exhaustive. Additional duties may be assigned by site administrators as needed to support students and site-based initiatives.
  • Teach material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned course schedule.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process, including class discussions, assignments, projects, research, etc.
  • Maintain online asynchronous communication (and synchronous if appropriate) with students in online discussions, to assist students in achieving completion objectives, monitor completion of assignments and coach special projects.
  • Provide regular, accurate, and timely student-specific assistance, feedback, and support to students relative to their performance.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and staff on a regular basis to develop and update student learning plans and schedules, provide feedback on student work, suggest instructional approaches and strategies.
  • Ensure assessment guidelines and regulations are followed at all times.
  • Assist with the development of new curriculum or coursework in the virtual environment.
  • Ensure student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification and provide appropriate interventions if necessary.
  • Ensure that each student enrolled in a virtual/online course has accurate and up-to-date records and log all student and parent contact.
  • Manage field trips and make efforts to integrate trips into the curriculum.
  • Implement virtual methods of creating and maintaining a school community.
  • Review curriculum and devise alternate approaches to presenting lessons to increase student understanding.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge base and willingness to implement a variety of web 2.0 tools to enhance student virtual learning experiences.

Planning, Preparation, and Programming
  • Demonstrates mastery of content, pedagogy, resources, and knowledge of appropriate subject areas.
  • Sets instructional outcomes for diverse learners, and provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Designs coherent instruction and student assessments aligned with Nevada Academic Content Standards.
  • Assist with school-wide data analysis, as part of a professional development needs assessment.
  • Implement instructional activities that contribute to a positive online learning environment where students are actively engaged in meaningful online learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with other members of the instructional team.
  • Clearly articulate deadlines, schedules, and procedures to students and parents to ensure that students complete coursework in a timely manner.
  • Assist school site administrator with student placement.
  • Assist students and parents with technical support requests relating to the course interface and student information systems.
  • Uses a variety of programs and software applications, as appropriate, to complete instructional and administrative tasks.
  • Reinforces and collaborates with grade level and/or content area team the consistent use of proven, research-based strategies for effective classroom management, lesson co-planning, active student engagement, and virtual/online instructional delivery.
  • Participate in professional development as provided and scheduled by the school site administrator.

  • Assist in providing information to community groups, schools, and/or parents about the virtual/online instructional programs and other marketing efforts that require teacher representation

  • Willing to visit and support students in their homes as necessary to ensure all students are progressing successfully through the program.

Special Education Responsibilities, if assigned:

Under general direction, provides assistance to Special Education students and other teachers needing assistance in the performance of a number of fundamental teaching responsibilities as described in Special Education law and in the four domains of the Teacher Performance Standards. Incumbent performs related work as required. (Special Education)
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with zone school to set up the change of placement IEP working with the zone case manager to monitor the implementation of the IEP.
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with North Star Staff to ensure that the IEP is being appropriately implemented.
  • Assess student learning congruent with instructional and IEP goals, monitor weekly student progress and provide zone school case manager with regular updates.
  • Work collaboratively with the zone school to implement the IEP making sure the student needs and goals are met and followed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records
  • Work directly with students and provide assessment data as needed.


EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Desired Qualifications

  • Online teaching experience and certification of online teacher training.
  • Home Visit Training.
  • Exceptional Communication skills written and oral with the understanding of the uniqueness of the online communication vs face to face.
  • Develop and deliver assessments, projects and assignments that meet the Nevada Academic Content Standards and assess student learning progress by measuring student achievement of learning goals.

KNOWLEDGE OF : Content expert - considerable content knowledge and expertise in using the principles and techniques for effective teaching practices for K-12, including: Standards-Based Educational Practice, application of Professional Learning Communities to improve instruction and student achievement, School Improvement Planning, and the primary concepts and structures of effective online instruction; possesses the ability and desire to work collaboratively as a team member with K-12 colleagues, administrators, and District staff; possesses successful experience in teaching and has first-hand experience in applying technology to improve and enhance instruction; a wide range of teaching experience; enthusiasm and a strong commitment to applying data and technology to improve and enhance instruction; integration of technology in the District in order to improve productivity by applying creative and analytical problem solving skills; understands the needs and concerns of learners who need to learn and/or improve their computer and other technology skills; demonstrates a variety of instructional/learning strategies; utilizes philosophical methods, resources, and publications for effective teaching, coaching, and mentoring practices as related to integrating a range of technologies , both existing and emerging that effectively support student learning and engagement in the online environment; utilizes effective coaching and mentoring practices.

License/Certificates : Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada driver license with a driving record acceptable to the District; possession of a valid Nevada teaching license. State Licensure/ endorsement in multiple subject areas. Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education; Must hold an appropriate endorsement in the subject area being taught.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

Additional Job Information :
This is a Limited Term position ending June 2021. At the conclusion of this position, the incumbent will be eligible to participate in the exclusive transfer process and overage process in accordance with the certified negotiated agreement.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
