This position supports a 1st Grade female student.

Summary:
This position provides one-on-one assistance to an assigned student with a disability in all school activities and day-to-day needs during the school day; assists a certificated teacher with instructional and non-instructional activities for the assigned student and other classroom students as time permits.

Responsibilities:
1. Accompanies or transports student in the assigned program to and from bus and to all classes and activities; tutors student individually or in small groups in assigned learning activity; assembles and operates adaptive equipment; modifies work assignments to accommodate student needs; pre-teaches or reads materials as needed; monitors student's progress.
2. Depending on assignment, monitors student's medical/health condition; communicates with student to ensure student physical comfort; dispenses and logs medication; monitors operation of health equipment such as oxygen; repositions physically disabled or medically fragile student as needed; appropriately deals with medical situations such as seizures; performs student personal care such as feeding and diapering as needed; may clean dishes and utensils following snack periods; may prepare and serve lunch and snacks to students in the assigned program.
3. Depending on assignment, monitors, corrects, and instructs student behavior, de-escalates anger and frustration, assists student in conflict resolution, restrains student when student becomes physically abusive to self or others; keeps student's attention focused on the work of the classroom.
4. Maintains daily communication with classroom teachers, specialists, parents/guardians, and program administrator, usually through written progress reports; maintains student records.
5. Models appropriate behavior for student; demonstrates and discusses behavior, reactions, and feelings to assist student in proper school and social behavior.
6. Depending on assignment, may use and/or teach sign language.
7. Depending on assignment, may supervise student at a job site on district or outside premises; instructs and encourages student.
8. Assists teacher in planning and adapting materials and activities as directed; arranges classroom furniture and materials to accommodate student needs for various activities; modifies classroom setting to ensure student safety and to ensure least restrictive environment and maximum participation.
9. Participates in department staff meetings; provides information regarding student.
10. Communicates with bus drivers and others about student's special needs as needed for the safety of assigned student and others.
11. Encourages social activities with other students.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

1. Attends core classes during student absences due to disability, and teaches student the material in the student's home, according to the Individualized Education Plan.
2. Assists, as time permits or in the absence of the assigned student, with general classroom tutoring, classroom management, and clerical duties such as duplicating materials, scoring and recording test results, and other classroom duties.
3. May perform cleansing intermittent catheterizations after receiving required training.
4. Performs related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS

Confined to work area; may be required to move students or materials; exposed to body fluid and infectious disease; confined to work station for prolonged periods; may be required to deal with distraught and/or potentially violent people.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Associate's degree or 72 credit hours of post secondary education or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instructing students; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets state and federal requirements.

Allowable Substitution
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of assigned developmental, behavioral, and/or physical disabilities.
Excellent interpersonal skills required for dealing with students with disabilities.
Basic sign language skills (for certain positions.)
Skill in obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information.
Skill in adapting equipment, material, and assignments for unique student needs.
Ability to lift and position students (for certain positions.)
Ability to organize and coordinate activities.
Ability to tutor at assigned grade level.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural, diverse socio-economic setting.
Ability to appropriately restrain students (for certain positions.)
Ability to feed, diaper, and provide toileting and medical assistance to students (for certain positions.)

Licenses/Special Requirements
Required to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.
Required to attend MANDT training (for certain positions.)
May be required to complete cleansing intermittent catheterization (CIC) training.
