JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the School Librarian, Building Principal and the Director of Libraries, the Instructional Library Assistant positively interacts with students, faculty, and staff and is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the library. The ILA assists students, faculty, and staff in the use of educational and technical resources offered by the library and works independently to provide efficient and effective delivery of information services; handles material circulation, operates, understands and demonstrates the online library automation system, and works to ensure student compliance with library policies and procedures.

JOB TITLE: Instructional Library Assistant

JOB GOAL: To assist the school librarian in the full utilization of services, materials and resources offered to students, faculty, and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
4 Year college degree preferred
High School diploma or equivalent with education/experience mix as determined by the Director of Libraries.
Ability to perform and take responsibility for tasks with limited supervision;
Assume responsibility for a major segment of the library's day to day operations, including clerical tasks, with limited supervision
Experience with the use of computers, library automation systems, internet, and emerging technologies as well as office equipment (photocopiers, laminators, etc.)
Ability to multi-task and work well as a team member
Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
Ability to take initiative and complete tasks independently where necessary
Possess good communication and organizational skills
Experience in a school library setting and/or working with students preferred
Familiarity with PC, Macintosh, and Chromebook platforms preferred
Familiarity with Google Docs and other Google platform apps preferred
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; ability to access books on both low and high shelves.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the school librarian, the ILA works independently to provide, in a professional manner, high-quality library services in the following categories (responsibilities may include but are not limited to):

Interaction with Students, Faculty and Staff

Maintain an academic atmosphere in the library and develop positive relationships with students
Assist students, faculty, and staff in:
- routine location of library resources including print, electronic and equipment,
- the use of library equipment, the library automation system and the library website
- library material circulation
- fielding new material requests from students/faculty
Readers' advisory

Curricular Materials
Assist school librarian in maintaining online resources
Assist school librarian with library lessons as needed such as preparing book carts, book lists, and/or pathfinders to support curricular projects

Collection
Assume responsibility for the maintenance of accurate, timely records of resources as well as (responsibilities may include but are not limited to):

•Inventory:
Maintain the oversight of the shelving and storage of all resources
Ensure resources are returned and shelved, especially at the end of the school year
Shelf reading for location accuracy
Maintain the accuracy of the of the collection database (library automation system), catalog and process new resources in a timely fashion
Run inventory reports
Track and send out overdue notices
Maintain the collection by repairing and re-covering worn materials, correcting mismatched barcodes, and replacing spine labels
Weeding: Under the supervision of the school librarian, delete discarded materials from the library database, and remove outdated and unnecessary books from shelves

•New Materials:
Create or import new data records for new materials
Check imported data records for accuracy
Cover, stamp, create and attach barcode and spine labels
Publicize new materials to school population

Volunteers
Interact with the volunteer coordinator and volunteers via telephone, email and in person
Determine and assign tasks to volunteers
Coordinate volunteer schedule
Manage displays

Technology
Support student and faculty technology projects, ie. importing graphics, scanning, copying, and printing issues

Supplies: Maintain supply and prepares orders for essential library and library production supplies that may include but not limited to:
Printer cartridges/toner
Batteries
Library supplies (book repair, covers, etc.)
Stationery items (construction paper, pens/pencils, copy/printer paper, tape, staples, etc.)
