JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Early Childhood Literacy Specialist works under the guidance of the District Program Facilitator for Early Childhood Education and in cooperation with the school principal. The Literacy Specialist will work with teachers and building leaders to develop explicit and differentiated literacy tier 1 instruction (especially reading and writing). Literacy Specialists will accomplish this by working directly with teachers to implement best practices through a mix of co-teaching, modeling, planning, debriefing/reflecting and leading PD. The Specialist will have an exceptionally strong understanding of literacy development across all proficiency levels. The Early Childhood Literacy Specialist will play a critical role in fostering a literacy rich environment, developing the literacy expertise and leadership of the school community, and will help to continuously manage and facilita te change through effective adult relationships. The Literacy Specialists will work with the Family LIteracy Specialist to intentionally engage all families in a culturally responsive approach to literacy.

Literacy Specialists will support increased student literacy outcomes in a variety of ways:
1. Job Embedded Coaching and Professional Development
2. Instructional Literacy Leadership
3. Collaboration

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience as an early childhood or prekindergarten teacher in multiple environments such as home visiting, PK-12 settings, or community partnerships.
  • BA required
  • Experience in providing professional development, including coaching, preferred
  • Minnesota Teaching License is required in one of the following areas:
    • Early Childhood/B grd3/FT
    • Fam Ed-ErlyChd/Prek/FT
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, classroom management techniques, current research on best practices and strategies as well as students learning styles and needs, both academic and social emotional

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participate in CLSD and coaching training
  • Provide comprehensive literacy coaching in evidence-based practices through action planning, co-planning, observing, modeling, and co-teaching that is differentiated to meet professional learning needs and non-evaluative
  • Serve as a literacy leader on leadership team and school committees that focus on literacy and student achievement
  • Spend 80% of their time working directly with teachers to enhance teacher practice and improve student learning through coaching on evidence-based practice
  • Promote the implementation of the District Early Childhood Education curriculum
  • Work within the district's academic division implementing the district academic agenda to provide world class education for all MPS students
  • Work closely with the schools and many other departments at MPS to ensure that the work is focused on the following areas: Accelerated academic achievement for all students, shared accountability for student learning, professional development for teachers and principals, and respectful and welcoming school environments
  • Develop and facilitate professional development for Early Childhood Education birth to five teachers and ESP staff
  • Develop and implement research-based instructional practices in District classrooms
  • Identify and provide research-based early literacy resource materials for use during study groups
  • Assist building teams in using data to drive and refine instructional practices
  • Assist schools in identifying exemplary supplemental and intervention early learning materials
  • Support District planning and communicate District information to building staffs
  • Increase parent and community awareness of the literacy curriculum and support for the District's literacy initiatives
  • Assist teams in examining cultural differences and their impact on student achievement
