The Helena Public Schools is accepting applications for a part-time (.80 FTE) lndian Education for All (IEFA) Academic Tutor. This position is responsible for providing individualized and group assistance to elementary, middle and/or high school students and will also be assisting the Indian Education for All Coach and/or classroom teacher while performing assigned duties and responsibilities for assisting students academically. This position will also provide assistance to Indian Education for All Coach and/or classroom teachers in the planning, developing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating of academic support services.

Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience as an academic tutor or college course work in Reading, English and/or Mathematics preferred but not required. Entry level salary is $14.52/hr and includes a comprehensive pro-rated benefit package.

Position Description

Position Title: Academic Tutor
Department: Elementary School
Reports To: Building Administrator
Date: 8/2018

SUMMARY: Responsible for providing individualized and group academic assistance to elementary students. This position will also assist in the planning, developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating of academic support services to students in elementary school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Works cooperatively with Indian Education for All Coach and/or classroom teachers while performing assigned duties and responsibilities for assisting students academically.
  2. Works with assigned students to provide academic assistance.
  3. May work in a Tutoring Lab to improve academic abilities.
  4. Provides assistance to Indian Education for All Coach and/or classroom teacher in development of instructional materials, assessing student progress, and managing student behavior.
  5. Participates in all in-service and training workshops as directed. (This may include training offered during scheduled school breaks)
  6. May test all incoming and questionable students for student progress assessment.
  7. Maintains essential student records as requested.
  8. Inputs student academic progress and other relevant records in data base.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). College coursework in Reading, English, Literacy and/or Mathematics preferred but not required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before people.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
