  • JOB TITLE: Senior Accountant
    LOCATION: Lower Campus
    WORK YEAR: 260 days
    WORK STATUS: Classified, Full Time Exempt
    REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    Responsible for performing critical accounting applications for the district. Prepares monthly interim financial statements and schedules for distribution to administration and Board of Education. Performs technical accounting procedures that affect district financial reporting. Performs the research and resolution of inquiries with regard to the financial management reports and prepares the reconciliation and account analysis of such financial accounting data. Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Maintain and manage the general ledger including posting of journal entries, balancing of accounts, month-end closing procedures, coding and processing of cash receipts, maintaining accounts receivable and others as required.
    1. Prepares and distributes financial reports for management and the Board of Education.
    2. Reconcile monthly bank and investment statements with the district's general ledger.
    3. Initiates and processes corrective accounting entries for financial reports. Reviews accounts for discrepancies and reconcile differences.
    4. Coordinates identified payroll entries. Updates and controls the payroll labor distribution tables for proper account code usage.
    5. Controls the year end close process, including scheduling the year end processes for the district including Accounting, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Payroll and Information Systems.
    6. Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
    7. Balances and distributes monthly budget reports to intra-district departments and schools.
    8. Audit the schools' activity funds on a regular basis to review for proper recording and procedures and make recommendations as necessary.
    9. Coordinates the district's annual fixed asset inventory, review reports and prepare necessary posting and documentation for audit.
    10. Maintain a working knowledge of the accounts payable, grants accounting, and payroll functions and provide assistance when necessary.
    11. Assist Chief Financial Officer with annual budget process and internal and external audit process.
    12. Maintains accounting system databases, tables, and programs; recommends system development when required
    13. Management of purchasing card program and monthly reconciliation of district p-card transactions.
    14. Other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum Education or Formal Training
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting
    • CPA Certificate preferred

    Minimum Experience
    • Five years accounting and general ledger experience
    • Governmental accounting experience required
    • School accounting experience strongly preferred

    Skill Requirements
    • Knowledge of fund accounting
    • Maintains knowledge of current GASB regulations/ governmental accounting laws and regulations
    • Proficient in Excel and Office Suite
    • Analytical skills
    • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively
    • Experience with staff training/presentations

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Demonstrate the ability to perform basic lifting tasks, sorting tasks and filing tasks. Perform tasks in a seated position for long periods of time. Repetitive motion.

    CLEARANCE:
    Must clear background check through Colorado Department of Human Services in addition to an online Records check and FBI Fingerprint check through Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

    SALARY:
    Salary placement is on the Classified Exempt salary schedule based upon previous related experience. Highest initial step placement is step 5 and is between $64,247 - $71,614.

    Please note: This is an at-will position with the Sheridan School District. The annual salary for this position will be determined by number of hours scheduled to work each day and number of days scheduled to work each year. The computed annual salary will be spread out in equal payments over 12 months. Sheridan School District employees are paid once a month on the last working day of the month that is not a weekend day or holiday.

    BENEFITS
    Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 10% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA and the District contributes 20.9% in addition to employee contribution.
