Job Description:

Responsible for researching, developing, implementing and evaluating communications for special projects to include capital projects, facilities projects, communication projects and projects that support schools, departments and the superintendent.

This role will also be responsible for identifying messaging around projects, conducting research and writing stories, news releases and any other written materials that relate to these projects, both for external and internal audiences. This role may also include occasional writing of newsletter content, op-eds, speeches and marketing content for brochures and other publications as required.

This role requires meeting tight deadlines, high-quality writing skills and a can-do attitude. This role involves proactive coordination with the media, experience in journalism, and experience in working with the media. Journalism/media experience essential.

Assignments are received through the Director of Communications, meetings, and written instructions/requests affording latitude for independent judgment and action in the performance of duties.

Work is performed under general supervision, and involves considerable knowledge of the school division's organization, policies, regulations and an ability to exercise tact and sound judgment.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism/English/public relations/ mass communications or a related field.

Experience: Two years of training and experience in public education, media relations work or journalism preferred. Journalism/media experience essential.

  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking and judgment skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Considerable research skills and ability to produce creative, innovative publications and promotional materials.


Essential Functions:

  • Develop, research, write, implement and evaluate project communication plans
  • Develop content for news releases, talking points, op-eds, speeches, newsletters, parent and community letters
  • Disseminate information to the public and school district staff.
  • Develop messaging
  • Provide communications support for community meetings and other division and of the School Board meetings as required
  • Serve as writer/editor for the division's website for projects and ensure the website is kept up to date with project information.
  • Generate stories that can be pitched to the media.
  • Serve as communications liaison between departments and schools.
  • Determine appropriate communications for target audiences.
  • Conduct research and solicit feedback through formal and informal means on activities, products and purposes of the public relations program and the school division in general.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
  • May perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.


Please note: This is a part-time position elegible for part-time benefits.
