The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school and college.

The Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW) aims to remove health-related barriers to learning such that students may succeed in college, career and life.

The Regional Children and Family Benefits Unit (CFBU) Specialist is responsible for conducting education and outreach to families in CPS and community settings. The Regional CFBU Specialist will also serve as the CFBU team lead in both schools and communities on all matters related to public health. They will lead work in their specific region to improve health outcomes and increase student/family engagement to establish trust and identify health related barriers to learning in the school communities they serve. They will work with management to develop standardized operations protocols to address the social determinants of health related to Enrollment, Engagement and Utilization (EEU) of health care, i.e. identification of students with chronic conditions, enrolling students into the Medicaid and SNAP programs, connecting students enrolled in the Medicaid program to their managed care plan for vaccines, well visits and mental health care services.

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Work to increase the health care knowledge and self-sufficiency of students, parents, community and schools through outreach, social service resource navigation, education, counseling, social support, and advocacy.

  • Work closely with CFBU Coordinators, Supervisor and Managers to develop and operationalize sustainable processes to support functional Enrollment, Engagement and Utilization of Care improvements for the OSHW.

  • Serve as the first point of contact for CPS Networks and schools by providing Enrollment, Engagement and Utilization of Care technical assistance.

    • Coordinate school health and wellness programming and program evaluation, including managing data collection and analysis.



  • Serve as the regional experts that support the CFBU Coordinators for all health-related issues and concerns raised by schools and communities.

    • Respond quickly and effectively to changes in the student/family/community to assist in the minimization of the fragmentation of care services and adverse outcomes.

    • Assist in the monitoring of documentation to reflect the necessary communication with the student/school, family, physicians, and other health care providers to ensure progression in meeting established care plan goals.

  • Work with management to deliver targeted technical assistance to medically fragile students who have high absenteeism by providing and coordinating health education, as well as case management services. Two key focus areas are as follows:

    • Improving identification of medically complex students.

    • Improving management practices in the school setting and among families/communities for medically complex students.

  • Provide health care access and utilization of care education for school staff, students, and parents to ensure Medicaid resources are available in school/community and support adherence to school health and wellness policies.

  • Collect weekly Enrollment, Engagement and Utilization data from staff in order to track progress and identify gaps in social service program referral/utilization.

  • Other duties as assigned.



ReEducation and Type of Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS)or 5-7 years of commensurate experience required.

  • Previous experience in health education preferred.

  • Knowledge of Chicago's Westside and/or Southside communities (resident of Westside or Southside communities preferred).

  • Passion for and dedication to working with community members and providers.

  • Punctual, reliable and willing to learn.

  • Must be able and willing to travel across the city (mileage and transit reimbursed by District).

  • Must be proficient with the use of computers and software, including but not limited to: Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point.

  • Experience and adeptness in meeting facilitation.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.

  • Possess integrity and tact when dealing with confidential information and sensitive situations.

  • Demonstrated skills in trend analysis to proactively identify issues and make sound recommendations.

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed.

  • Bilingual skills in English/Spanish preferred.

  • CPS employees are required to be actual residents of the City of Chicago within six months of beginning employment, and are required to maintain Chicago residency through employment.
