Reporting directly to the Manager of Educational Technology in the Curriculum Instruction and Digitial Learning (CIDL) Department, the Educational Technology Data Specialist is a critical role within the Office of Teaching and Learning responsible for two core functions: (1) Curriculum Equity Initiative (CEI) reporting and data analysis and (2) monitoring of District-approved educational technology tools/products. The CEI is a portfolio of programs that will yield CPS' first digital curriculum.

The Educational Technology Data Specialist will leverage their experience and expertise in the areas of business intelligence, data management/analysis and technology integration to drive continuous improvement in the CEI and support effective partnerships with the District's pool of educational technology providers. The ideal candidate is highly-effective, organized and analytical and comfortable with changing/fluid work dynamics.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Collaborate regularly and effectively with stakeholders from schools, network offices, central office departments, vendor partners (potential and contracted), parents and students to build and improve the services and supports necessary for digital equity across the district.

  • Serve as a liaison to CPS' academic offices and CPS' Offices of Information Technology, Procurement and Law on matters relating to CEI reporting and educational technology.

  • Support the performance tracking/management CPS' pool of Ed Tech providers, from the formal solicitation and selection of providers to utilization tracking, etc.

  • Design/Optimize data models and utilize standardized district tools for reporting.

  • Develop user interfaces, which involves creating charts, filter boxes, list boxes, and text objects.

  • Collaborate with department and network analysts and strategists, end users and other stakeholders, to ensure that user requirements are gathered, analyzed and reflected in standard/recurring and adhoc reports.

  • Provide input into the creation/maintenance of development and testing plans, implementation project plans, and data-informed marketing and communications plans.

  • Establish continuous improvement processes to ensure reporting and associated processes are iterative and evolving along with the CEI and District strategies/targets.

  • Support the implementation/continuous improvement of the CEI's technical ecosystem

  • Advance the goals of CIDL and the CEI through consistent, effective collaboration with internal and external teams.

  • Establish evaluation guidelines so that data from different schools can be compared and effectively used as part of the broader evaluation of educational technology programs.

  • Model the routine, intentional and effective use of technology in daily work, including communications, organization and management tasks.

  • Create standard operating procedures and systems for requesting data, monitoring the flow of data, and ensuring that data are clean and properly documented.

  • Keep abreast of the current trends and best practices in instruction, technology integration, and business best practices and represent the district as an expert on these and other (related) topics.

  • Support the ecosystem of products and services (SIS, LOR, LMS, SSO, Assessment and Rostering) as requested and/or assigned.

  • Ensure that Ed Tech vendors adhere to IMS standards for integration and interoperability and participate in our district SSO and rostering solution and/or platform.

  • Serve as an active member in the District's Data Analyst User Group.

  • Additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.



The Educational Technology Data Specialist should have demonstrated ability and/or experience to:

  • Knowledge of technology and business theories and practices.

  • Knowledge of supply chain practices and standards.

  • Knowledge of open standards practices and standards including but not limited to IMS Global.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to decentralized decision-making and accountability for results.

  • In-depth understanding of business intelligence/data analysis concepts/methodology, basic programming techniques, data extraction, data cleansing and data mining.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Educational Technology Data Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Predictive Analytics or a related field of study or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Professional data analytics or programming certification preferred (e.g. SAS, aCAP, CCA, etc.).



Type of Experience and Number of Years:

  • Two (2) years in data management/strategy/analysis

  • Two (2) years managing large data sets.

  • Experience extracting data from various systems and modifying it to create views that can be utilized readily by senior leaders, project team members and end users.

  • Preferred technical skills, knowledge, and abilities:

    • Experience with SAS, R and/or Python

    • Experience with SQL and/or C#

    • Experience with GIT for code management.

  • Demonstrated strong programming skills.

  • Expert level knowledge of Excel or similar applications for creating Pivot tables/manipulating data and creating graphs and charts.

  • Demonstrated, strong experience using/manipulating CSV files, JSON files and a text editor such as Notepad ++

  • Knowledge of IMS Global standards, particularly OneRoster and visualization programs such as Power BI

  • 2 or more years of educational technology experience in K-12 Education preferred

  • Knowledge of effective communication skills and problem-solving strategies.

  • Evidenced success in collaborating with culturally and educationally-diverse teams



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
